Tim is extremely competent and knowledgeable about just about every Volvo ever built, but be forewarned- Volvos are the only make he works on. He stays incredibly busy, because he is literally a one man operation- he even answers his own phone. His prices are very reasonable, and is very competent. I cannot reccommend a mechanic for Volvos more highly than I reccommend Tim Higgins.

It was a classic disaster. After a nice vacation in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia, my Volvo wouldn't start. The only garage in the small town where I was staying said they could barely spell Volvo, let alone work on one. But the tow truck driver said there was a guy in the next county who did work on Volvos. That was Tim Higgins of Laurel Creek Trading. My car was a disaster when Tim started working on it. I had been mindlessly using a big city garage chain for about five years when finally the cumulative loose ends resulting from their shoddy work overwhelmed the poor thing. Loose parts under the hood, severe oil leaks, fouled sensors, incorrectly gapped spark plugs - you name it, I had it. And Tim found it all. He's an ace in the truest sense of the word. Unlike the big city guys, he doesn't rely on a computer to tell him what to do - he knows the Volvo landscape thoroughly. He knows the suppliers out there where he can get reliable reconditioned parts. He knows the quirks that these cars have. He is honest, diligent and thorough. He called me - twice - after I was home to see how I was running. I plan to make a side trip to see him when I visit West Virginia every year. Looking forward to it, in fact.

Tim Higgins, the owner and mechanic of Laurel Creek Trading, is a world-class mechanic of tremendous skill, and a great human being. He has cared for my 1990 Volvo for the last 10 years. He always does excellent work, and really goes the extra mile to save his customers money and explain good car care to them. I cannot count the number of times that he has talked me though a repair over the phone (no charge), when there were problems he felt I could handle myself. He is a creative and talented problem solver with conscience and heart! He often works on my car while I wait. No magazines or waiting room, just good stories, NPR on the radio, and a beautiful Appalachian hillside to explore behind the shop.

Tim Higgins is an old-school top notch mechanic, the kind that you used to hear about but have never met. He methodically works his way through the problem, being sure to diagnose it the first time and correctly. Other shops will just do a repair and charge you for it, even if it is not correct, and you end up coming back anyway. Tim will fix the obvious, talk you through it every step of the way, and then give you a list of steps to complete that will help you identify any other problems that may arise. I really appreciated his candor and understanding that everything does not have to be 'perfect' and understands the 'personalities' behind the cars and their owners. Tim's prices are more than reasonable, he will spend time speaking to the customer, but be willing to work with him. Someone of his character and qualifications working on your car has a small price to pay...patience. He works to get you the best prices on rebuilt or new parts, and this can take a little time. Just be aware of it and know that you are not going to the fast food of mechanics, but rather settling in for a delicious 7 course meal that takes time and the experience should be enjoyed. See the other comments about the shop's location in the West Virginia hills and the relationship that is formed with Tim Higgins. We will certainly continue bringing our Volvo to him as long as we keep the vehicle.
