We've dealt mostly with Alvin, the owner, for almost 20 years. Recently he (1) went out of his way to help our step-daughter who was stranded, and (2) did a minor repair on my car on a day he wasn't even supposed to be in the shop. And he didn't charge me. Whoa! They're willing to do whatever they can to make the process run smoothly for the clients. In the Wesleyan & University Ave. area of town.

I began taking my cars to Matthews Motor because they were literally next door to my business. I didn't know how lucky I was. They were always honest and would perform the needed repair, even if a problem seemed like it required a more expensive repair. I had domestic and imports and they seemed equally comfortable working on both. If the address is still missing above, it's 6203 Edloe, between University and Rice.

What a wonderful place to have your car fixed. Charles who manages the place is a friendly person to talk to in addition to being very knowledgeable about cars. My first visit to the shop for car repairs was excellent. The service was prompt and the estimates were reasonable. I had two front axels replaced and the price was right on. They didnt over or under charged me. If you live near the medical center this is the shop for you. I was particularly impressed by a mechanic name Mario who went the extra mile to figure out without any extra charge why my AC was not working properly. He stayed even after hours to get the job done. He could have charged me for diagnostic examination but didnt. This is the kind of mechanic you would like for working for you---who truly loves to work on cars, and figuring out problems and resolving them. Three big cheers to him! PM

My 95 corsica needs a new radiator. They asked for 330, which is 100 below all the other places' best offers. The people seemed nice as well. I brought a book and read on the bench beneath the tree across the street in a nice afternoon. Call beforehand so that they can get the parts before you get there and that speeds things up.

We had a recurrent problem with our '99 Camry that persisted for two years, and had been misdiagnosed repeatedly. Charles fixed the problem quickly, and it has not re-occurred. We will go back to him when necessary, and recommend Matthews to all of our friends. Superb.

We tried this shop after reading about it on this website and having a few unsavory experiences with others in the area. Everything I've read here appears to be true. I can add that as a woman with small children I haven't always felt fairly treated when dealing with the car, but at Matthew's they were not only respectful and professional with both my husband and myself, but also very accomodating about having kids around. Also, one time our car would only make it's recurring funny noise in our driveway upon starting, and Charles actually came by on his way home to check it out.

I had a great experience at Matthews Motor Co. today. They were friendly, helpful, quick, and knowledgable. They treated me (a woman) with respect and mentioned that they travel to fix a flat tire if the car is in the neighborhood. I've only been once, with a minor repair, but I was very happy with my visit. They charged me for the part without any labor costs. I will be recommending them to others.

Thanks to Car Talk and Matthews Motors. My daughter drives 3 hours to Houston to start a 3 month summer school. Checks into her apartment, goes to the grocery store, comes back, and the transmission will not engage. This is Sunday at 3pm. I look on Car Talk for a recommendation, and she has the car towed, sight unseen to Matthews (which is closed). The next day, they call and say it will be $88. They had to repair a linkage on the transmission cable. These folks could have taken us for a new cable or even major transmission work, but they did the right thing, never having seen us before and probably not again (hopefully).

We found this shop on the website after our daughter drove 3 hours to begin a summer program in Houston. Her car died in a grocery store parking lot (transmission shifter moved, but the car would not). Sunday afternoon about 5pm. We have the car towed there. Call the next day, and they tell me, it was a broken transmission linkage...$88. Ready that afternoon. They could have taken us over the barrel, but new customer, out of town, they still did the right thing.
