My husband and I recently purchased a used 1993 Toyota 4Runner and I want to share our appreciation of Saturn of Austin, where we purchased the vehicle, and Red McCombs Toyota, who performed the factory service on it. The 4Runner was beautiful, had only 51,000 miles and was priced well. The only problem was a rattle from the engine upon acceleration. After speaking to our mechanic and checking out listings from other Car Talk listeners, I discovered that there was a factory repair needed on the head gasket. I contacted Toyota and they confirmed that this work had not been done on this vehicle. We spoke with Red McCombs Toyota and they confirmed that they would perform the work at Toyota's expense-even to the point of replacing the lower engine if necessary. My husband negotiated with Saturn of Austin to purchase the vehicle with a written 30 day power train warranty. With the recall work from Toyota and the power train warranty from Saturn, we felt protected enough to purchase the vehicle. Upon purchase, we took it to Red McCombs Toyota and the vehicle did indeed need a completely new lower engine. Toyota took care of all of the work and included a rental car for me while the 4Runner was in their shop. Saturn agreed to pay about $800 to recondition the top part of the engine while it was torn apart-valve job, timing belt, oil pump, etc. We have a brand new engine in our used vehicle and are very, very happy. We were extremely pleased by the professionalism of both Saturn and Toyota. The integrity of these dealerships was very refreshing and gives us hope for corporate America. A special thanks to Mike, the General Manager at Saturn, and Graham in service at Red McCombs Toyota.

I had a very different experience. When I took in my 1985 Toyota van in because the check engine light came on they quoted me a price of $2,300 to fix the problem. because the van isn't even worth that, i took it to san antonio to our regular mechanic and they fixed it for $280.00. I feel like instead of telling me that i have a very difficult car to work on and it was more trouble than it was worth to them, they quoted me a rediculous price to scare me off. one of my friends has reported them to the better business bureau. i would not recomend anyone to go there who has an old car or anyone who doesn't want to pay too much.
