I met these guys by accident, at the Pacific Highway location, when my radiator started smoking on the way to the beach. They had us on our way quickly, and were nice to the kids. Ken's friendly dog hangs out in the waiting room at the Barbur Blvd shop. It seems like everyone on the block goes to Pacific Car Care on Barbur Blvd., and has a story about how great they are. My neighbor Mel loves them beacause they took such good car of his mother's old car.

They have taken car of my Honda for years. I have never had any issues or even a break down. The crew are top notch, honest, and dependable. Prices are reasonable, and they explain everything well . If you are looking for the best, you have just found them.

If my husband brings in the car, he understands what they're talking about. If I bring in the car, they explain it to me in a way that I too can understand what they're talking about. They take the time to give you your options and don't always recommend the highest-priced job. We have never felt that we were getting a snow job; we go with their recommendations and we're always happy (as are the cars). We went through three other mechanics before we found Ken and his guys and we've been with them now for 6-7 years. Other cars they've worked on for us (besides the Isuzu Trooper) have been an Acura Legend, Ford Escort wagon and Saturn station wagon. Oh, yeah -- the waiting area is large, clean and comes equipped with lots of back issues of People and Ken's black labrador, Brandy.

First, their address & phone (what's the good of knowing about a good mechanic if you can't find them): 8350 SW Barbur Blvd. Portland 503-293-7200 Great guys, great mechanics, fair prices (nothing's cheap anymore), don't try to sell you something you don't need (think any dealer service department, service writers), and my wife and Ken enjoy giving each other a hard time. Oh yeah, and they really give you a bad time if you let your oil get too low or don't bring the car in on time for an oil service ($16.99 - who needs Jiffy Lube).

Truth is I don't know if they treat male & female customers equally. I am female and I have never been talked down to by them. If this is concern of yours rest your fears. Work is explained carefully and completely to me (and reviewed as needed). They help me prioritize by cost and immediacy. The work is done on time, changes in quote (happened once: went up about $2.) are phoned to me for approval. They have long day hours and key drop BUT they are closed weekends. Once I left a phone message on Sunday nite & Mike called me very early Monday morning to be sure I could get in before work. We have an 10 yr old Saturn and a 6 yr old Ranger and they have not failed me. They have a sweet dog that leaves you alone and they check my tires when I have a road trip. Once I fell asleep in the waiting room and Mike put a jacket on my feet. That's customer service.

Our car was hard starting and had a strong fuel smell upon starting. It seemed to me that since fuel only appears at a few well defined places in the car, the problem should be easy to find. Two days and over $100 later, a nearby shop found nothing, claiming further that they couldn't even detect a fuel smell – this despite the fact that, upon starting, we had to roll all the windows down to get fresh air. We then took the car to Pacific Car Care. They found the problem (leaking fuel block) in under thirty minutes.

I bought a very used Volvo and tried to have it evaluated by several Volvo shops in Portland. The normal shop I use does good work, but they are very disorganized and can take a long time. The V shop is very organized, very efficient, very nice. They gave me very bad news about my car and did not charge me for looking at the car because they did not recommend fixing anything.

My college student son took his car in which had overheated and the dash had quit working. They diagnosed the problems quickly (water pump & bad dash ground) and made the necessary repiars in a very short time. They fixed what was required and didn't make a production out of it. They communicated extremely well throughout the process. Their charges were reasonable too. Great shop!
