As the driver of two Jaguars, one of which is a 1986 XJ6 well out of warranty, finding a honest, knowledgeable and reasonable independent mechanic is essential--you can be eaten alive by dealer repair prices. One of my law partners (another multiple Jaguar owner) put me onto Jack; I had just moved to Charlotte and was ready to give up my '86 due to a series of small but annoying typical Jaguar items which would cost $2,000 to clean up at the dealer-- Jack did them all for $600. He has over the last year refurbished many parts of the car for me (wiring, fuel injectors, brake vacuum booster, front suspension, ball joints and bushings, transmission kickdown cable, catalyst, exhaust mounts, etc.) as well as such mundane things as oil changes, a nail in a tire or tire rotation. The car is now as tight and smooth as when I got it in 1988; I visit Jack every two or three months and expect to pay $1,000 annually to keep the car in top shape. He also has done the regular interval work on my 1995 XJ12 flawlessly (I still use the dealer for anything under warranty). His shop is far out and inconvenient to get to, but to find such a knowledgeable, honest and reasonable enthusiast is worth it all.
