Any small items or "fix-its" adjustments are done while you wait (like wiper blades).

The owner's name is actually James Hoban. George Rusiff was the original owner who sold the shop to James. They are excellent mechanics. I have had vehicles serviced by him since 1984 as have had many of my friends. Consequently, it takes some time to get an appointment but in an emergency he will make the time. I always tell him if I really need the vehicle right away or can allow more time for repairs so he can fit in an emergency. I have called him from different parts of country when travelling for advice when I needed service. The only downside to using his shop is I tend to keep my vehicles too long so all my familiy's cars have at least 150,000 miles on them. James will also attempt to save you money on repairs by rehabbing your old parts with your permission.

PLEASE take your vehicle to James if you need an honest mechanic. last week I heard Tom and Ray talk about sourcing this part of their site for those of us who are trying to buy an ebay car from out of state/ sight unseen. This is my situation, and I called James to have him once-over the truck I was considering buying and shipping to my home. This man spent 15 minutes on the phone with me (a person who cannot patronize his shop)- he was thorough, honest, and patient. In the end, I did not buy the truck he looked over for me, and even though I insisted on paying him for his time, he would not take my money. I so wish I lived in Billings to give this shop my business. I hope you'll give him a shot at your next auto repair. By the way, VERY, very well versed on my truck of interest- this man knows his vehicles!! Car-ma is real, take yours to him ;-) -Dean

James and his staff are true professionals. I call him from all parts of the country if I have a problem for his advice. Like other customers I tell him if I need the car right away if he can take his time. This allows him to take emergencies and we are all there at one time or another.

We have had our old '77 car worked on several times at Russiff's, and they have always done a great job. I especially appreciate the attention James gives his customers, which is not something I've come across in any other shop in Billings.

I was referred to James by a friend, and I have referred him to other people. James is Great! He is honest and competent!! His prices are reasonable, and he always saves the old parts for you and explains everything fully. I would heartily recommend him to anyone!!!

I commented in 2003 (2nd comment posted). Just wanted to fill out the survey. All my comments then are still relevant.

James spent time a few weeks ago diagnosing the check engine light on my 1995 mercury Mystique, told me what was most likely wrong and then did not charge me for his time. Took the vehicle back to him today and costs for repair were very reasonable. Repairs were done on time and James took some time carefully explaining just what he had done. I will definitely go back to him, even though I have to drive 45 miles to get to his location (although out here in Montana, we do not consider that very far). I would say that if you are in Billings or passing through, then Russiff is the place to go for repairs.

You know the drill: Cross-country on hot I-90 and the check engine light goes on 20 miles shy of Buffalo, Wyoming. No one there can diagnose, but one suggests that the truck ought to make it to Billings, Montana. It did, but probably only because I held my breath all the way. First thing in the morning I head for Russiff's (found on this site) and owner James Hoban is up to his ears in backlogged repairs. Still, ever smiling, he quickly brings his analyzer to my truck at the curb, identifies the problem (alternator) and says if I'm in a hurry to reach my destination (Missoula) I can give it a try, but lay off all electrics (A/C, etc.); try it for 50 miles or so. I head out, but at 50 miles, check engine light comes back on. I call James and say I'm heading back to his shop. He says good, he'll be ready. I'm there in an hour, and he has already acquired the necessary (and hard to find) part. Goes right to work, chatting cheerfully all the while, and has me back on the road in about an hour. Not just a true automotive genius, but a charming gentleman! Best I've ever dealt with, and I'd recommend him (or his colleague Ray who has been with him 28 years) to anyone, for anything, any time!
