I had a 1997 Mazda Protege. Another garage had charged me $80 to tell me
that I needed an exhaust manifold and then told me that it would cost between
$600-700 to fix. I asked if it would run without it and when they said yes, I
drove it like that for a couple of years. My boss recommended Payne-less, so
went to them. They told me that, in case it wasn't that, there was an exhaust
place down the road that could do it cheaper. However, they said he wouldn't
work on anything that close to the engine and, if it was the manifold, to bring it
back and buy a part from a salvage yard and they'd install it for $100. I bought
the part for $100 and when I took it in it was done the next day and he said that
he had expected me to get a used part and that there was something additional
he had to do for the new part and it was $115. I wasn't going to argue. Then he
said, "What did I quote you? $100?" I said "yes". He then said, "I don't like to
go over my estimates. It's $100." He also checked out the car instantly without
charge when the 'check engine' light came back on.
