Jon has taken time to help me understand what it is that caused the problem. He is the proprietor and the only mechanic on duty so appointments are hard to get but the work is always done in a timely and acceptable manner. Jon was a factory driver for volkswagen so he knows the cars extremely well. His shop rate is lower than most but his knowledge and abilities are astronomical. He also knows a great deal about modifications and racing and performance setups but he mostly does common repairs. I am a student and Jon understands this. He has consistently treated me well and fairly. Never once have I felt that he has made any unnecessary repairs. He also repairs other shops work.

John's garage goes by two names: "J&S Automotive" and "Kaulbars Motorsports". He is a former mechanic for VW Motorsport and really, really knows Vdubs. Many members of our water-cooled VW club, Volksport, use John's services. He has modded my engine and suspension, diagnosed every squeek and rattle, and performed the usual service. The thing is, he often works by appointment, so it may not be suitable for all fixes.

John Kaulbars has been working on my 10+-year-old VWs and
Audis for over ten years. He's the reason I still drive
German cars! Top-notch service, real parts (used when
possible), very reasonable prices, and has always treated me
(a woman) totally respectfully and discussed repairs with
me. He also helped me find a used VW to buy. Does some
performance modifications; he used to race VWs. Very near
the Mall of America. I'd recommend him unequivocally.

John is an excellent mechanic. Ex-VW Racing guy, knows his
cars inside and out. He only works on certain VW models /
years, which is great, so he's not trying to be the jack of
all trades and years like other shops. I have a 1997 VW
Jetta, and he's done lots of work for me over the last few
years; I've recommended him to other VW friends. I highly
highly recommend his work!

I've taken my older VW to Jon a twice. He is a one man shop
so sometimes he can't always look at the car the day he
thinks he can if things run over on another job. That said,
since he is such a reasonable priced guy, I can't see why
anyone would take their car to another shop.
If you want your German car to be fixed right the first
time, I don't have any questions that you should take it to
SCI or Good Carma or one of the other I am sure fine VW
specialists in the area. But if you want it fixed right and
it not to break the bank, give Jon a call.
