This was the only place that could do an engine replacement for me a few years ago in a very big hurry. They did it right (the engine is still going great). Since then I've had brakes, shocks, front-end and transmission work done, every time done right the first time. The only re-work was a year-old starter that began giving trouble - they replaced it for cost. I keep OLD cars - my current two have 134K and 164K miles on them and I need a decent mechanic!

Several years ago, they fixed a leaky air conditioning system for a total of $102. The dealer wanted over $1,000 to fix it. The dealer claimed it needed a new compressor; all it needed was a little $2 O-ring (and $35 for the diagnostics, and $65 for an R134a charge and labor). Since then, I had maintenance, brake work, ignition systems work, and every other repair done at this shop on 4 cars: my wife's, both my children's, and mine. 3 of the 4 cars are moderately old and require some work. The automotve business is very competitive in the Detroit area. Jake's is very reasonably priced, and their work is impeccable.

After a poor experience (in my opinion) with the dealer, I went to Jake's for a second opinion...and I am glad I did. When I called, I let them know I was coming to them for a second opinion and that my check engine light had been on, as well as the entire litany of things the dealer told me I needed. They said if I brought in my diagnostic code, they wouldn't charge me to run it. They got bonus points for that! I had to drop my car off after hours, and received my call almost first thing in the morning to give me the scoop on my car. They did confirm that EVENTUALLY my car would need all the stuff that the Toyota dealership told me about, but there were two major differences: 1) the total price was about $500 less and 2) they told me what I really NEEDED to do now, and what could wait. They got even more bonus points for that. I had them go ahead with the most critical repair (something that could have ruined my engine had it gone bad) and asked again about the other fixes, and they reassured me it could wait another few thousand miles. I paid over the phone and picked my car up after hours--so I never actually spoke to or saw anyone in person... but that didn't alter my feelings about this place at all. I have since gone back for work on the same car and another car--and I would recommend them to anyone.

They also have a shop in Auburn Hills. I have had very good experience with them both as primary shop and as a second opinion. Before they do any extra work, they call to get it OK'd and have even advised me when it would be cheaper to do the small things (like bulbs and wipers) myself, if I have the time and confidence.
