am rather particular regarding mechanics and those that work
on my car, as I try to "Do It Yourself" as much as possible.
I needed a new timing belt as a part of 100K mileage work on
my 2000 Nissan Xterra. I had bought the parts online – belt,
water pump etc, but did not feel confident in replacing the
timing belt myself.
I phoned several local shops (via yellow pages) for
estimates. The two I called, prior to Foreign Car Services
Inc, looked up the time in their labor books and quoted me
their standard labor costs according the "book time".
When I called Foreign Car Services Inc, the counter girl
asked "Mr. Kaempf" what the estimate would be – he asked if
it was turbo (introduced in this car in 2002) and I replied
no - Just the standard 4 wheel drive. He quoted me a price a
couple hundred below the other shops. I could tell from this
that he didn't refer to the labor books, but knew off the
top of his head. I asked if he would use my parts and they
said no problem.
I did need a wheel alignment, but as they outsource the
alignments – I deicided to have the alignment performed
elsewhere.
I dropped the car off the night before the service work.
While they were working on the car, they noticed that the
drive belts were worn and recommended replacement. I agreed.
They had the car completed on-time, and according the
estimate – updated with the additional drive belt work. They
test drove the car before I arrived to make sure all was in
working order. Repair costs were completely reasonable.
I am glad that I have found a trusting mechanic. I will
bring other cars back for repair – I know they are in overly
competent hands.
