Jake at Riverwest Auto has most all of the qualities I look for in a good mechanic. Besides the "being a good, competent mechanic" part, what's important for me is that he's a good communicator, a straight-up honest dude, and will work with you to brain-storm the best, most appropriate strategy for repairing the vehicle. If a used part offers the best compromise between getting it fixed right, and getting it fixed right a little cheaper, he'll work with you. If you already bought some parts but found out you really *couldn't* do the repair yourself, he'll put those parts in for you. Jake had a loaner, "courtesy" car for a while, but last I heard that vehicle had given up the ghost, and hadn't yet been replaced.

I don't know how to answer any of your questions, cause I only personally went once. Took my 1995 Golf in. He happened to have the exact same car. He only works on VW's. After years of trying to get the car to run smoothly, he fixed everything possible from brakes, to a tie rod. He gave me a discount on everything, charged me fairly, gave me great advice, seems totally honest. It rides perfectly now and should last another ten years with his help. This is a guy who loves VW's and loves to keep cars running. I'm happy I was refered to him. And will keep taking my trusty Golf to him.

If I have questions or concerns, the owner always takes time to answer, even if it means reassuring me that little or nothing needs to be done.

After years of dealer visits and using another independent shop that did not specialize in VWs, I felt very lucky to come across Riverwest Auto here. You know how you call the dealer, and they just say, "Make an appointment and bring it in"? Well, not with Riverwest. He told me exactly what he could and could not do. He also has the diagnostic equipment to deal with computer and sensor issues. Since he does service only, he knows about a lot of typical VW weaknesses, and he'll share that with you without worrying what the sales staff up front might think. Another great thing is he will tell you what he can or cannot do ... for example he says he can't compete with the tire places, so he doesn't ... It's not worth it to try to deal with keys because VW makes it very difficult ... "See what kind of prices you find for that part online and I'll put it in for you". In summary, great place. I would have no reservations recommending Riverwest, although if you're looking for a fancy waiting area or shuttle, you're on your own.

Nice little place. It's small, but they do a great job diagnosing and fixing my car when the big guys cannot. Highly recommend.

I am so glad I found Jake as a mechanic for my 86 Vanagon. I called a couple places because only a few mechanics in my area seem interested and capable of working on these vehicles, and repairs can be costly. On the phone, Jake sounded like he was pretty familiar with these vehicles and he suggested a couple things I could do to try and remedy the erratic idle speed. I eventually took the vehicle in since I also had a coolant leak. Jake quickly identified the problem when I dropped off the vehicle, got me an estimate the next day, and finished the repair days before promised. The price was very reasonable and the vehicle now runs great. I feel that he is very honest, really takes pride in his work, and I was very comfortable leaving my vehicle in his care. Will definitely be using his services again.
