Although I have moved away from the area, I cannot say enough good things about Doug Richmond and his crew. I started taking my vehicles to Doug about 25 years ago when he was a one-man operation and stuck with him as his business grew--and moved. He is the essence of honesty and integrity. He will not do work unless it's needed, but he'll also tell you what is--and will be--needed. Last I knew he's booked about 5-7 days ahead but will always help in an emergency (i.e., no brakes) and treats his loyal customers well. There are many tales I could tell about my auto experiences with Doug. One amusing story is when my wife was driving a early- 80s Datsun B-210 automatic (BTW, one of the best $900 cars I ever owned) and one day it simply had no power. We took it to Doug. He spent an hour with the usual diagnoses and then discovered that the air filter was full of acorns, which blocked the air flow. No thanks squirrels, thanks Doug... no charge! More recently we had a bad experience with our Ford Contour. We let the oil get dangerously low and after a very cold New England winter night started it up and headed out, only to have the oil light come on a half-mile up the road. Because of the viscosity and the cold, the oil hadn't done it's job and we toasted the engine. Doug tracked down a compatible engine from a crashed Mercury Sable with only 5,000 miles, got it and installed it for under $2,000. A final note: Doug loves electrical system challenges (I don't know why....) and will often solve them but only charge for part of his time. This is a great shop--you won't go wrong!

Doug's great! His garage has worked on both my '86 Vanagon and my '99 Jetta TDI, two vehicles with some special needs. Unlike many other shops, Richmond's has always understood those needs. I totally trust that he's fair and honest, too. I can't say enough about how great they are.

These guys are all very good, and Doug is an electrical genius which is rare among mechanics.

Doug and his team are great. They play the best rock while they work, have really funny mechanic cartoons through out the shop, and Doug loves tigers. The are the real deal!

Always a pleasure doing business with Richmond Auto. He's always on time and his bill is always slightly less than his estimate. I won't use any other mechanic as long as I'm in the area.

During the 3 times I lived in the area, I always used Richmond. These people are great. Doug runs the service operation. Unlike most places, Doug always has the customer in mind, and he truly understands that in this society, most of us are not "loaded" with money. They never do work unnecessarily and you can always count on complete honesty. Labor charges are levied on the basis of how much time the repair actually took, not on time estimate provided by the manufacturer or other "authority". The mechanics are all excellent. Most of my experience was with a mechanic named Mark who was absolutely great - and also a fine human being! I always felt like I was in good hands with Mark and with Doug. I could drive in with a little problem, like an annoying "Service Engine" light - they would always take care of me in a timely fashion - and tell me if I really had nothing to worry about. Anyone living in the Brattleboro/Guilford area would be crazy to go anywhere else. Appointment were always made at the earliest possible date - and sometimes it would take a few days because so many people have discovered the integrity of these folks. However, when you were stuck - and unable to get the machine moving, they would always do their utmost to respond as quickly as possible - almost always the same day. Thanks to Doug, Mark, and all the other mechanics at Richmond. Now that I have recently moved to Florida, I only hope that I find a place half as honest!!! Fred

I would trust Doug with any car repair you bring to him. He won't charge you for it if in the course of working out what the problem is, they fix the wrong thing. He won't lie to you. He'll give you advice on how to handle negotiations if your car breaks down 600 miles away and you are in the grasp of a random mechanic your car got towed to. He'll check the codes on your car and tell you whether or not it's worth the bother to fix it. He'll be realistic about costs, and won't fix anything that doesn't need fixing. It's hard to find a mechanic you can trust if you are a single female - I'd send anyone to him, without hesitation.
