Doug had a bad mechanic working for him. When he came back from vacation and went through some old bills, he noticed that the mechanic was padding the repairs, because he knew the cars. He fired the mechanic and called his customers and made a complete refund of all the charges. He is the cheapest mechanic I know in Northern Virginia, but does great work. He'll install your parts if you want to get them at a discount auto parts store.

Originally I had a problem with the air conditioning on my 1989 Ford Probe. It was blowing warm air. First, I went to another mechanic who was highly rated by "Checkbook" magazine and close to public transportation. He wanted $1400 to fix the air conditioning. I declined. Then someone at work recommended the above garage. They fixed the air conditioning for $265, which was about one fifth the price of the first place. There is no public transportation that I know of that goes out to Sterling. There are some rental car places nearby.

I have a 1990 Honda Accord that failed Va state emmission test at a local gas station. After doing some work on it the car failed again. I got the standard spend $400 and get a waiver on it. I was almost ready to trade it in but decided to have a second repair shop look at it.I took it a shop that had did some work on the car once before, Automotive Machine & Repair in Sterling, Va. I talk with Doug who told me up front that they were not a certified emmission repair shop and could not give me a waiver but did do the testing. They tested the car, found what was wrong and fix it for a lot less then the $400 for the waiver. They didn't change part's just to run up the bill. I highly recomend this father and son repair shop. We found Doug & Crew via this site. They worked on our '90 Nissan truck and '99 Mazda Protege on several occasions. Service was honest, timely, effective, and affordable.

Over the summer of 2010 I went here for the first time as my 01 Formula needed an alternator. They were great to get it in there fast, but it took two diff alternators to get it fixed right. Last week I decided to take it there again for an emissions test. It failed for a right side catalytic converter, which I had them replace. They then decided to take my car out and drive it 52 miles to "reset the sensors," without my direct permission. I had filled up the car with gas immediately before going there and this 52 mile "test" used OVER 1/4 tank of gas. I've never used that much gas in 52 miles, even when I was running it hard, so I guess they were out hot-rodding in my car. To continue an already bad situation, when I got the car home I noticed that there was an exhaust leak on the side they JUST FIXED. So I take it back over there and the mechanic, who seemed nice enough, states that the gasket GM sent wasn't right so we RE-USED your old one... pregnant pause in the conversation and continued with "I guess that didn't work" Now that being said, they fixed the leak within an hour and were pretty responsive about it, but I find reusing a 5 or 6 dollar part when there is a napa store not 100 yards away is just shoddy workmanship. I will NEVER go to this shop again, and will also be passing this info along to members of both local car clubs that I'm a member of.
