This was not work done for me, but for my son. I am in what I call the Third World part of Mexico in the mountains; he is in Danville, VA. Last week he told me his wife's late 90's Contour would not start. He had it towed to a mechanic who told him it had three bad pistons and another motor would run over $1200. Finding it hard to believe a car which ran well when it was parked developed three bad pistons while sitting there, I came here to look for a recommended mechanic, and Buxtons seemed to have a bit more plus stuff than others. So, I suggested a second opinion. Today, he sent me a mail today saying he had the car towed to Buxton's who told him he had a frozen a/c compressor clutch, and a bad compressor. Thanks to Buxton's and to Cartalk and readers who recommended them! Good job!

Bryan is simply the finest mechanic I've ever worked with. His prices go far beyond the realm of fair and his demeanor is a delight to all his customers. I am a mechanical idiot who is easily taken advantage, and Bryan has honorably resisted the temptation everytime I've come to him. Let me tell a quick story. One morning I woke up to discover my 1998 Mazda 929 had somehow transformed itself into an immobile brick. I called Bryan as he was the only mechanic I had talked to for a 2000 mile radius (I was new in town at the time) and plead for assistance. Bryan sent out a tow truck and gathered the world's largest paperweight into his garage for assessment. After an inspection, Bryan informed me that I had an electrical issue that was going to take sometime to track down. I had worked with diffrent mechanics on electrical issues before with other vehicles and knew that these problems were difficult to fix and even more difficult to pay for (my last mechanic charged 50 bucks an hour for electrical), so I figured I was headed for a getting hosing on this one and immediately headed to my bank and researched the soon to be required loan. The next afternoon I walked in to the shop to find Bryan oily and desheveled leaning against a doorjam. He informed me he had been wrestling with Mazda factory issue wire bundles for the past 8 hours and was just putting the finishing touches on the single burned out wire that had caused the malfunction. I felt light-headed as he tallied the bill on his computer and I mentally performed the same calculations using the old 50 buck per hour formula. After sometime Bryan stood, apologetic but firm, and stated his price: 175 dollars even. He didn't even charge for the tow. It took a herculean effort of willpower to stop myself from smooching that grease covered man right on the lips! Needless to say, since that incident Bryan has been my sole mechanic.

Brian rocks! He is the best mechanic I've ever worked with. When ever something goes wrong with my car, Brian is the only person I call. He's more than fair and I've always found him to be honest, even if it hurts. And unlike the boat-owning scam artist mechanics out there, Brian is willing to admit defeat instead of simply replacing random things and charging me for them. I always recommend Brian to anyone that needs car work done.

I drove to Danville from NC to look at a used car. I went to Brian's because of the good comments from other Car Talk fans. When I took the car to the shop (with salesman in tow!), Brian was very receptive to giving the car a through once-over. The three of us even took the car for a test-drive (yes, it was very awkward to have the salesman there but there was no other choice). Brian felt that mechanically the car was sound but was troubled by the fact that paintwork had been done to the rear end. On further pressure, the dealer did admit that "work had been done". I can't thank Brian enough for identifying a problem. He was very honest and competent. I wish I could have him as a mechanic in my town!

Visiting our son's family who just moved into Danville - I drove into town on Sunday with a disk pad grinding the rotor to tinfoil. I found Buxton's Westover Garage on the Car Talk website and spoke with Brian at 8:05 Monday morning. He said bring the car in at 9:30. They replaced both rear rotors and breaks by 11:15 and did it for a great price. This guy (and his team) really takes care of you, and especially if you are in a jam. For a small hometown garage he has has a very clean waiting room complete with a flat screen TV and great support staff. This is a very professional, honest, friendly and affordable place. Needles to say this is where our son will take his cars.
