I wish you had a more positive selection for your answers than "agree strongly". Randy is a great mechanic and treats females as if we actually know what he's talking about. He always uses visual aids (the old parts) when explaining what was wrong with the car and what he did to repair it. His prices are reasonable and he does the job right the first time, so I've never had the experience of having to have him respond positively when he "screws something up". He specializes in Suburu, but I have a '87 Chevy Nova and I see all makes of cars in his shop when I take mine in for service.

Since I live in CA, when I drive to SLC, I ALWAYS have them check out my car and fix anything that I know needs to be fixed. Their prices are fair and reasonable, unlike prices in California.

After having repeatedly horrible experiences with the Subaru dealership, I finally took my probelms to Randy and Max at Old Fashion Service. Not only are they within a mile of my house, but they got me in immediately, called me with their recommendations, and had everything fixed a few hours before their estimate. AND, they were at least 20% less than the dealership. Thank you, cartalk, for having this mechanic search available. I didn't know who else I could turn to.

Easily the most honest and dependable repair shop I've every taken my cars to. Randy is only there part-time now but Max and the rest of his crew maintain the same high standards they always have. Napa Auto is one of their new supply partners but I don't think that has affected the service. They always get you in when you need the repair and they have your car done on time. Subaru is their specialty but don't hesitate to take them another manufacturer's car. If they can't help you, they will be up front and tell you so. Max and Randy are good about explaining, in easy to understand terms, what they are doing to your car and why. Hours of business are Tuesday - Saturday 7AM - about 5:30 PM.

I've taken my cars to Max for several years and have NEVER had anything but great honest, fair priced, and competent work. The first time I met him, I authorized him to do some repairs. When I came to pick up my car, he said he was able to do the job for less than the estimate and saved me some money. Not bad after I'd told him to go ahead at the original price. These guys are the real deal.

My car failed emissions at Performance Emission on state street, so I took it to old fashion to get looked at. Old fashion front desk told me they "made a bunch of adjustments, and cleaned everything out". They also retested my emissions for me, and my car passed. I was charged $100 for this. Out of curiosity, I used my free retest at performance emission, and the result hadn't changed from their first test. So old fashion's work made no difference when tested by an independent party. I basically got charged $100 for old fashion to finagle a passing emissions test for me (my vehicle failed idle hydrocarbon emissions at 710 rpm, old fashion's reported idle speed was over 1000? My car has never idled that fast). If they were going to just fudge the test anyway, why not just retest it using "their method" first before poking around the engine bay for an hour? Why charge me for the work they claim to have done, (which they claim was the reason my car passed at their facility) which made no tangible difference when tested by a 3rd party? Seems fishy to me. My friends and family will be taking their cars elsewhere now.

the car was taken to their shop for a over heating problem they was tould it was overheating when we talked to them from the start some how the write up was it was smokeing eather way the problem should have been varified it was not and they put valve covers for a overheating witch did not fix the problem and 1 price they said went up buy 100 dollars when the work was done but they said the car was over heating and needed more work and more cost when we called to get the car we tould them that's why we brought it in and it would be even more cost to repair seams they don't listen to the customer and they do not make good on their mistakes of mis diagnose i would thing befor takeing any car to time this is on going and has not been settled as of yet
