John knows what he is talking about (this was confirmed by others who know much more about cars then me). His charges are a little more than I would like but thats the price one pays for a good mechanic. He is very honest and won't cut corners. He told a colleague that he wouldn't put an inspection sticker back on because the brakes were unsafe. He told another friend IN FRONT OF THE SELLER that he wouldn't buy the car being offered for sale since it had a bent left axle - the problem was so subtle that it was perceptible only to the most competent mechanic!!. Very courteous staff and an awesome lazy boy for an afternoon nap while your car is being worked on.

We've been bringing our Honda to Whalen for a few years now. Frankly, as soon as the warranty on our Odyssey ran out I was thrilled to take it somewhere besides the dealer. Kim is the best "service writer" I've encountered and always goes out of her way to understand a problem and explain what work has to be done. I feel like everyone there takes the time to understand what's going on with my car and fix it correctly.

I'm new to town and I've had a few significant repairs done on my Honda Civic at Whalen's shop -- everything was done quickly and seems to be working great. I can vouch for these folks' ethics especially -- through a simple mistake of theirs, my car was damaged after they worked on it -- they immediately accepted responsibility and made sure that my car was fixed and that I didn't have to pay for anything. I'm happy to keep taking my car there and would recommend it to my friends.

John is incredibly honest and straightforward. He's not afraid to talk shop and tell you exactly what's going on. He tends to keep old parts on hand and show you what was wrong with them after they're replaced. The only catch? He ain't cheap. In fact, things tend to get pretty expensive. Charges a lot (2-3 times in-store prices) for small parts and consumables like fluids. But it's (generally) worth it. John is quite simply the best, most honest mechanic I've ever dealt with. Extremely competent.

We had a Buick in which we had destroyed the engine by pulling a too large travel trailer. John put a new engine in for a reasonable price as the car was only a few years old. It was good as new and still running 11 years later. We also had an Olds Cutlass which turned out to be a lemon. He looked it over and advised turning it in as it would never be right. He also advised not to buy any more olds at that point. And sure enough, they stopped making them. John knows his profession and is honest and fair. I highly recommend him.

Whalen Automotive is awesome. I have dealt primarily with John and Amel, but am sure that Kyle is very good too. These guys go out of their way for the customer, always explain the problem the'll be fixing and why it needs fixing, and are all about the high mileagers. John and his crew can fix just about anything. I have never seen an unhappy person leave their shop. They have wireless internet available in the waiting area and Amel has even shared cookies he received from a happy customer with my wife and me when we were in getting work done. If you listen to Car Talk, you know sharing goodies is not common auto mechanic behavior. If you have a high mileage Honda or Japanese car and live in the capital region, this is where you should take it.

John and his mechanics allowed me to keep my high mileage Jeep on the road at a fraction of the cost of the Chrysler dealer. I have since sold it and will now take my newer Ford pick up to them. They send out pleasant maintenance reminders that include coupons, and their prices for parts and labor are very reasonable.

I have been taking my car here for a few years and I am very pleased with the work performed. The communication is excellent. Appointments can easily be made online and reminders are sent two days before. The work has been done correctly and John is honest and will explain the problem and required service clearly. I will not take my car anywhere else. I am writing this as I found out about Whalen here in this database, and I wanted to let people know this is a good place to take your car for repair. I won't bring my car anywhere else!

I've brought my car in for both 'emergency' work and routine/scheduled maintenance. They are unfailingly accommodating, fix the problem (except for a rogue TPMS light that even the dealership struggled at length to re-set), explain the work, and offer a quiet, welcoming waiting area. Everyone -- from John to the receptionist -- is knowledgable and does their best to take care of what's necessary in a timely way. I brought my Honda CR-V to them, and now bring the Mazda CX-5 in. Thanks to this website originally, I found this shop which I trust fully.
