Well, this is an unusual comment for the Mechan-X files. I'm
actually the Senior Web Lackey for Car Talk, and I've been taking
my car to A&A for 10 years now, with excellent results. They're
great guys, and exceptionally fair.
One of the most important criteria that Tom and Ray use, however,
is how a shop responds after a bad screw up-- a shop's behavior
at that time can be very telling regarding their approach to
customers and repairs.
Well, as happens from time to time at any shop, A&A made a rather
serious mistake on a repair of my car. The results could have been
disasterous. Be in business long enough, though, and thats
inevitable. (Just ask Tom or Ray-- they have plenty of stories of
cars falling off lifts, etc. etc) The important point, however, is that
when I told A&A, they were immediately apologetic and offered to
reimburse the subsequent repair cost, no questions asked.
That's great service. Everyone makes mistakes. What's important is
what you do after that happens. A&A scores big in that department,
and they've made a customer for life out of me.

I moved to Gorham two years ago, with a 13-yr-old Honda
Accord (1993) that I had owned for only 6 months. I asked
around among colleagues for a reliable auto service place,
and almost everyone recommended A&A and said they took
their cars to A&A themselves. In my experience, Brad and
Alan have been unfailingly competent, fair, and timely,
with very reasonable prices. When I spun out on an
icy/slushy interstate highway one winter day, and hobbled
home at 40 mph with significant vibration all the way, I
told A&A that I thought the wheels were probably out of
balance, and I left the car with them. When I went back to
get it later, they told me that nothing serious had
happened, that the wheels were still well balanced, and
that the only problem was that my rear wheels were full of
mud from where I skidded off the road. The car is now 15+
years old and has over 181K miles on it, and still going
strong, getting good mileage, and cranking every morning
without fail, thanks to A&A.

I am reviewer #119563, 2008, and I need to tell you that
the guys at A&A not only *told* me that my tires were not
damaged or unbalanced, they also *cleaned* all the mud off
the tires for a very minor fee.

My parents have taken their cars to A & A forever . . . my
husband's parents have taken their cars to A & A
forever . . . my husband and I took our cars to A & A until
we moved out of state. We always received top-notch
service, good prices and most importantly, honesty. I wish
A & A would decide to relocate to where we are now!!

I miss these guys! I have logged a lot of time on that narrow, hard, grey bench and a lot of time down the street at the White Mtn Cafe while I wait for my car to be worked on. However, once I managed to purchase a Honda (instead of a series of Chevy, Subaru, Mazda, Jeep, Jeep, Toyota) I found that I had little reason to visit with Brad and Dana and the crew. I have even stopped in a few times just to say hello:) When I've been in for the few things wrong with the Honda, I am always pleased with the small bill that I'm presented with (if any bill at all). I love their honesty and the fact that they treat me just like anyone else, even though I'm a girl. Oh, it kinda helps that I also managed a vehicle fleet of 25+/- and brought them all those vehicles too........but now that I no longer send tons of business their way, I still take my own vehicle to them, when and if it actually needs work. It's a solid half hour drive for me but it is worth it for their honesty. Miss you fellas!
