They communicate with you, no matter who you are, they are honest, they do the work you want, it usually doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and your car is ready when they say it will be. They are like clockwork. (They also sponsor the local public radio station, and NPR is usually playing on the stereo in the shop.)

Al and staff are competent and honest. They seem always ready to do the needed repairs in the most cost effective way, which may sometimes includes recommending a good used part instead of a new one.

Although Al's is really expensive (which is somewhate characteristic of all the shops in Chapel Hill), at least they complete the repairs in a timlely manner

I was terribly over charged for an alternator; however, the work was done well and the mechanics took time to explain why the alternator on my Toyota went out so early in the cars life. I was impressed with the willingness to explain the repair, but dissappointed (especially after reading about how 'honest' Al's is from other customers.) with the excessive price for my repair.

Al is incredibly honest and quite inventive. He tells you when (in his opinion) a car should be retired to the junk yard, and then proceeds to fix it anyway if the customer so desires (which this customer generally does...)Al repairs things in the time he promises, explains what repairs were done, and always calls first if a repair will be over a certain dollar limit.

I have been taking my cars to Al's Garage since 1986. I cannot say enough great things about the service I have received there. I refuse to take my cars anywhere else. For those that say Al's is a little more expensive (I personally have not found that to be the case), I'll gladly pay a little more for Al's exceptional quality of service compared to the rest of the crappy service out there. And honest, you won't find a more honest shop.

Al and staff are terrific, they kept my '88 Chevy Nova running long after its time had run out. Al explained my car's problem to me and had saved the bum parts to show me what they'd replaced; he actually seemed to care that i understood what they'd done. "Intake" staff were very helpful and gave me good estimates of how long and how much, and a beeper so i could call and make decisions about the patient. Good regular service (oil change) too, didn't try to talk me into a lot of extra services or more frequent oil changes. AND Al's Garage donated for local community events!

What price can you put on honest, competent service. Because of Al and his crew I can buy a used old 1985 Honda and make it last for years. Call ahead and make an appointment and they will usually have your car ready that same day. Great service, great people. Love, love love them.

I have taken my cars to Al for 12-13 years. I was refered to Al's after a series of unfortunate but predictably unpleasant encouters with Mazda Dealerships in Wisconsin, Virginia and North Carolina. I have been able to rely on Al and Don to keep my cars running. They have provided me with accurate advice on when to dump a dying vehicle. They have keept me sane when my vehicle failed its annual inspection for questionable reasons. My car is done on time and completed under the estimate every time. I do not feel that theirs prices are excessive. I have a habit of not returning to pricey, unreliable service of any kind. I have no plans to change where my cars are serviced.

I've gone to Al's garage a number of times after failing to get the original problem resolved through the dealership. I found these folks took the time to analyze and diagnose the problem versus merely switching out parts hoping to correct the symptoms. On top of doing quality work, the bill was always less than I had expected. Quality work at a fair price - a winning combination!
