Al keeps a close watch on his shop, and is free with good advice, even if it reduces his ability to make money off of you. He always was concerned that we were satisfied with the work of his employees, always gave fair and reasonable estimates, and remains busy because of his reputation in town.

I don't live there any more...but Al and his staff were by far the best mechanics I've had. 2 quick anecdotes: 1. My former car, a '79 Nova, was checked out by Al before a long trip & given the seal of approval. On the trip, the brakes failed. Al replaced them for free. 2. My current car, an '87 Ford Escort (I got it from my brother for free, so I shouldn't complain), has been having all sorts of problems, and in desperation, I called Al long-distance for his opinion: that's how much I valued him.

Al has always been honest about needed repairs AND the cost. He has gone out of his way on several occasions to make safe repairs and try to save me money at the same time (not an easy task). Al explains everything in terms even a blonde can understand and always has a sympathetic ear. I have had several emergencies--specifically with my teenage son's car (driver's window falling out during a rain storm; a complete break down in the middle of the road)--and Al has always taken the car and made repairs promptly. In addition, the entire staff working for Al is always courteous, helpful and knowledgable. In short, Al's Garage is one of the best, most trustworthy places in town to have repairs made. And, Al is a sponsor of Cart Talk on WUNC radio. They're a great group of mechanics!

Al and his fellow mechanics are up-to-date trained and extremely competent. Al, owner of the business, is known throughout the community as honest. He is forthright in the assessment of the vehicle brought in for work to be done. The vehicle's owner is made fully knowledgeable of repairs and price before any repairs are done. Women! If you fear being ripped off and treated like a dummy because of your sex, this is a garage where you need have no fear!

There may be a conflict of interest here in that Al's Garage is a sponsor of the local Car Talk broadcast. But I found them to be honest and when they could not fix something, they refferred me to another mechanic and did not charge me for the diagnostic.

They communicate with you, no matter who you are, they are honest, they do the work you want, it usually doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and your car is ready when they say it will be. They are like clockwork. (They also sponsor the local public radio station, and NPR is usually playing on the stereo in the shop.)

Al and staff are competent and honest. They seem always ready to do the needed repairs in the most cost effective way, which may sometimes includes recommending a good used part instead of a new one.

Although Al's is really expensive (which is somewhate characteristic of all the shops in Chapel Hill), at least they complete the repairs in a timlely manner
