We bought an '89 740 wagon from one of their mechanics, a car that had always been maintained by their shop. Great car, good deal, honest appraisal. We have used them since then for maintenance and repairs, and they do a fine job. Their prices are 30-40% lower than those of a closer shop that gets rave reviews on this web site. And they have loaner cars for about $15 a day.

I have owned Volvos since the 60s, and these guys know these cars. They checked over my daughter's 1992 240 and explained a number of minor procedures that needed to be done to keep the car dependable -- including replacing the old galvanizxed metal fuses with brass fuses, and cleaning the fuse contacts, cleaning out the throttle body, etc. We had asked them to replace the timing belt, forgetting that it had been replaced a year ago. They did not replace the belt. Great shop!!

This shop is great! They fixed my volvo when 3 other dealerships failed. One time I had a fuel pump fail from the dealership and instead of replacing it they sent me back to the dealer becuase it was still under warranty and the part was fixed by the local volvo dealer for free. Another time when my car died in an intersection the owner of the shop helped me push it out of an intersection, to his house and then fixed it on the spot. The greatest group of car folks you could ever meet.

I trust the crew at P&A Smith completely. I drive from Chapel Hill for their exceptional service and advice. They have worked on 3 Volvos for me. Jack's humor is great.... a car talk standin?

P.A. Smith is definitely the best mechanics shop I have ever been to. They really have very good knowledge on Volvos. My 93' Volvo 850 experienced a water pump failure this summer. The engine was damaged by the water pump failure. I was very fortunate that a friend of mine told me that PA Smith is very good at repairing Volvos. After talking with Paul about my car problem, Paul gave me very good estimate of how much it will cost for the repair. I was very convinenced that Paul knew what need to be done for my car. I decided to have my car towed to their shop from my home at Chapel Hill, which is almost 30 miles away. As Paul estimated, they open my engine and fix the problem. In addition, the major service was also done in the mean while, since they have to open the top part of my engine. They also clean the parts they can touch without additional charge. I am very satisfied by their work. Now my nice 93' Volvo runs nice and smooth as before, may be better. Thanks, Paul.

When I bought my first Volvo, the salesman strongly suggested P&A Smith as an alternative to the dealer. I searched around and read all of the glowing reviews here on CarTalk and said to myself, "There's no way these guys are as good as advertised, not these days." I was wrong. They're that good, and more. They're ridiculously trustworthy and honest, and treat their customers with an equal amount of trust. As an example, on my last visit they suggested I have the transmission flushed within five thousand miles. When I brought it back as suggested, I had a call within an hour informing me that at some point in its previous ownership the transmission had been replaced (I knew this but had stupidly forgotten it) and that this somewhat costly procedure wasn't unnecessary for quite some time. It can be expensive to keep a Volvo in good condition, and being able to trust that I'm not wasting it on work that doesn't need doing means I'll keep coming back. The office area is small but clean, the staff are all warm and personable on top of their honesty, and it's clear that they value each one of their customers as individuals instead of just ambulatory wallets. If you ask ahead, you can usually reserve one of their elderly but well serviced vehicles for an extremely reasonable price, and they're always willing to explain exactly what they've done and even look at a car that's just left the shop if the (over-paranoid in my case) owner thinks something might be wrong. If you are anywhere, and I mean ANYWHERE in the area and drive a Volvo, you need to go to P&A Smith. You'll be amazed at the increasingly-rare excellent service the provide.

I had such great success with both of my vehicles under their care that I purchased a new vehicle specifically because they work on it. They advised me on model selections, options and cost. P & A Smith is the highest quality auto service outfit I've worked with in more than 45 years of operating cars. I have total confidence in their work and will continue to go to them exclusively.

We've taken several of our Volvos to them for work. They have always treated us -- who know very little about cars other than my wife swears by Volvos -- with respect. When part of the front end of our station wagon needed replacing because of the years of driving we had done on the dirt road in front of our house they had all of the bad parts out for us to see and explained how one problem had caused a second problem. I've never felt pressured by them nor like they were trying to sell me something I didn't need. They're generous with their knowledge and time. I happily recommend them!

P&A Smith specializes and works on only Volvo, Lexus and Toyota vechicles. They do a much better job on my Lexus than the dealer and at a very reasonable price.
