Al's a little on the taciturn and gruff side, so you have to get past that, but he's about as competent, honest and fair as they come. His shop was recommended to me by a guy whose love is old sports cars like Jensens and he used to take his old Volvo P1900 to Al. Unfortunately, Al is good and charges what I would call premium rates. In other words, he's expensive but worth it. Also, he's honest enough to tell you when the problem would be better solved by a specialist -- though I sometimes interpret this to mean he doesn't really want to do it and can afford to say no. If you have a Volvo and need work done, he's the best but will work on virtually any import -- he might just complain a bit more about it, don't take it personally. A couple brief anecdotes. A coworker came into the office one day all upset because her car's (a Toyota Corolla, I believe) engine had started making unfriendly noises while driving into work. She stopped for advice at a local gas station mechanic and they told her all kinds of dire stuff like possibly problems with the cylinder head, etc. So she was crying because such repairs were way out of her budget. I calmed her down and said, "Let's go talk to Al." So we drove over there. Al took out his stethascope and put it on the engine, listened for a bit and said, "Naw, there's nothing wrong." Didn't charge her a penny. Another time, I brought my own Isuzu in for regular maintenance. In the process, Al noticed that the battery's ground cable had been disconnected, evidently by some previous mechanical work by my dealer's shop (how could they forget something like that?). No idea how long I'd been driving around that way. Naturally, Al hooked it back up -- and didn't charge for it either. He's done other little things like that for me at no charge too.

Larry is fantastic. He is no nonsense. He knows Volvo's inside and out. He is honest and only fixes what needs to be fixed. I brought in a car I was terrified required extensive work. Larry evaluated the car and explained the work that needed to done right away for safety. He gave me an order of importance list and then worked with me to complete the work as my budget allowed. I am so lucky to live close. Larry is excellent, and I highly recommend him.
