Peter is very community minded and has hosted radio call-in shows about car problems and topics (but don't feel like your livelihood is in danger!) and also is not afraid to speak out on social or political issues. No, he is not running for public office. His daughter made it to the national finals in Soapbox Derby a couple years ago, and Peter likes to join the other old car afficianados in the "Awesome Auto" annual drive here in Maine. He's a great guy, very consciencious toward his customers, and he has saved me from scrapping my car at least a dozen times (mostly with the lemon I owned before the Geo). You'd like him, too.

Peter Brown and the guys will check out a car you're planning to buy (used).
They've saved me from buying a lemon a couple of times. Classic Maine
Yankees - frugal (won't do anything unnecessary - honest, etc. Took four tries
to get me a used functional radiator, but they kept on plugging away.

They showed me exactly what was wrong with the car, how it
works and why. Very respectful, great service.

This is a fantastic garage! I moved to Portland ME about
seven years ago and after trying three shops (one of which
was a reginal chain garage)I decided to stick with
Cumberland Avenue Garage. They always, always explain to
me what they are going to do to my car and why. I ask a
lot of questions, so that may help. They also will give
customers information about repairs/maintenance that may
be upcoming in the car's life--beyond routine maintenance.
I am a woman and I feel I am treated in the same
outstanding way their male customers are. Mike (manager)
is terrific, patient, and is always willing to talk to me
about my car. I've also used them to look at cars I was
potentially going to buy and they were great about
offering the service and advice. These are some of the
most honest mechanics I've ever worked with. They are
thorough and that may make visits cost a little more, but
it's totally worth it. Plus, if you don't want them to be
so thorough, they won't be. They'll do what you "need" to
have done and let you skip the "what would be nice" to
have done. I love them! I am not related to anyone who
works there.
