My family and I were traveling west along the Massachusetts Turnpike when our Toyota pickup suddenly developed a loud sound (like the sound of a helicopter) from underneath the vehicle. I stopped and checked for a soft tire, or something loose underneath that might be causing the noise and saw nothing. Thinking it was a universal joint, I proceeded slowly, with flashers to the next exit. In the village of Westfield, I inquired at a mini mart about where I might find the most competent and honest mechanics, and was referred to the Center City Muffler & Service. They were extremely busy (a good sign), but Steve suggested a short test drive, thinking it might be an easy repair. He said it did not sound like a universal, but suggested a loose wheel or a dragging brake drum. We agreed that the sound was coming from the left rear. Realizing that we were traveling to Fairport, New York, Steve pulled another car from one of the garage's bays and pulled my truck in. In a few minutes he had removed the left rear brake drum and found nothing. He was about to pull the right rear drum, but decided to check the front wheel lug nuts first, starting with the left front. The lug nuts spun freely and several could be removed without a wrench. He checked the wheel, then proceeded to tighten the lugs to the proper torque, and check the other wheels as well. We again test drove the truck to make sure that was, in fact, the problem. The charge was for a half hour's labor. I cannot thank Steve enough. What I feared would be a day's wait with a night's motel bill and a huge expense turned out to be a minor problem because Steve was willing to spend a few moments taking a test drive and applying his knowledge and skills. Frank is the best as are his mechanics. Competent, reasonable and pleasant. I brought in a car for the new struts that MIDAS had told me I needed to quell the sound int the front end of my girlfriend's Escort. The receptionist asked me why I thought I needed struts. When I told her it was MIDAS what told me I needed struts. She said "Give me a number I can reach you at when I have to tell you what's really wrong." Well sure enough my phone rang with the news that my struts and breaks were fine (MIDAS had said they were gone as well). I needed new bearings. Well, they were right. Frank also diagnosed a problem with a new/used car I bought from a local dealer that the dealer got wrong EVEN after I told them what Frank had said. Frank rocks!

Frank has been our family mechanic since he started in the business. It must be close to 40 years. Our families lived in the same neighborhood -- the old Slovak section of Westfield. My father loved Frank, and, until his death at age 93, he baked muffins or bread and took them/it to the shop, loving the attention they all showered on him for bringing the goodies. In turn, Frank's father was our plumber since the dawn of time. Frank is a remarkable man. In addition to being a man of high principles and brilliant at his work, he was never gender-challenged. He had female mechanics way before women were generally seen in male-specific occupations, and his female receptionists have always been very knowledgeable about cars and car repairs. Frank's partner Steve is also outstanding -- honest, hard-working, reliable, a great diagnostician. I may be based, but my assessment is based on decades of experience. I am always treated as a valued customer. If I need my car back in a hurry, Frank will stay late if necessary to finish it. Everyone who works there is competent and helpful. What more could one want?
