The people at Tremont Street Garage are crooks. The worked for years on our previous car, a 1998 Ford Windstar, and my sisters car, a 1998 Toyota Camry. The price always seemed high and they always made sure to point out seemingly minor issues that would say needed immediate attention. They quoted us over $2000 to fix my sister's air conditioner a couple years ago. We took it somewhere else and had it fixed for $800 and it still runs great. The final straw came when the Windstar broke down and they said it needed a new head gasket. We told them not to work on it and that we were going to get a new car. We got a call back later in the day saying they had already fixed it before the first guy called and that it was only going to cost us $300. $300 for a blown head gasket?! After years of being overcharged? Clearly, they didn't want us to get rid of a bad old car that had turned into a money pit. I think the guy was afraid he wouldn't be able to afford his boat payments if we moved to something more reliable.

I made arrangements with them on a Friday to bring the car in very early on Tuesday so they could diagnose the problem with why the rear backup light wasn't coming on, fix it, then get an inspection sticker. I didn't get a call until late in the day on Tuesday about the problem and it would mean keeping it overnight. On Wednesday, I still didn't get a call by the afternoon so I finally called them and they said they were just making out the invoice. The work done was correct and the cost was expected. They also pointed out work that they believed I should get done, without knowing a history of maintenance on the vehicle, such as my timing belt and water pump (it had been done 50,000 miles previous), and an oil change, reading the sticker on the windshield from the previous time. I became 'part of the family' since I had been once. They were nice, courteous and got the job done but were too quick to have extra work done on the car and didn't communicate on the amount of time it was taking them to complete the work. I waited 2 days to have them put a new switch in, which they told me they suspected was the problem when we discussed the Friday previous.

These guys double if not triple the price if what the repair should be - and when you catch them doing it they try to explain that a rusty bolt may make a typical water pump job go from $300 to $1000! Never again.
