You already know Fred. In spite of that, let me assert he is diligent, thorough and communicates clearly. His prices are reasonable, if you remember that you probably drove a Volvo into his shop. Like any auto repair Puzzles & Mysteries can cost more. When he solves a puzzle, you pay for parts used and labor. Otherwise he will ask you to pay for parts but rarely charges for labor if the mystery was not solved.

Fred is very knowledgeable with Volvos. He knows the problem the first time and fixes it he first time. While he is through, prices can be a bit steep. That is OK with me because he has never once steered me wrong. The car always works and his repairs are always right. Be sure to call in advance as he can be very busy. A busy shop is a sign of a good competent staff.

Here is an example of the treatment you get at SAS: About a year ago my Volvo XC V70 was having an ignition problem. I dropped it off at SAS in the morning and in the early evening learned that it was suffering from a malady that was under an extended warranty, which needed to be corrected at a dealer. Office manager Zee made an appointment for me with Boston Volvo, called AAA and I had the car towed for repairs at BV. No charge from SAS. About 2 weeks ago I received a recall notice from Volvo America for precisely this issue. BTW, The staff of Fred Swanson, (apparently still on reduced hours after a serious illness), Zee (the office manager) and Mark (head mechanic) are funny, intelligent, competent, patient, technically well-informed and honest. And they always have good music playing in the shop. I enjoy visiting them and am glad to pay whatever is necessary, since I trust the repairs and feel safe on the road with my repairs entrusted to them.

Fred was great in explaining the reason for each repair/maintenance procedure that he was going to do. He also pointed out possible future problems that I should keep my eye out for -- but he did not say they needed to be fixed. Everything with him was very straight-forward. He even kept the old parts, so that when I came back to pick up my car, he could show me what was wrong with them. Best place for Volvos in Boston!

Generally very happy with the recommendations made, they did a good job of identifying which repairs were critical and which could wait (cosmetic). Owning a Volvo is tough on a grad student budget, but they were helpful in keeping me rolling.

I have used Swanson Automotive for two years now. They are reliable, honest and reasonably priced. I have owned my 240 for over 15 years now and have been to more than 9 different mechanics as I have moved around. They are one of the best I have encountered.
