I reported that my car had been dying occasionally at stoplights & sometimes while driving. He said that it would be difficult to determine the problem but he would put his best mechanic on it. After about 30 minutes he said the mechanic had found the problem & that I needed an idle control motor. He said a cheap one was $350 & a better one was $500. Although he had information in his computer stating I had gotten a tune up 4 years ago, he recommended a tune-up. He said that was not causing the problem but was needed. The tune-up cost was $197. It all seemed expensive but I was tired of the problem & told him to fix it. When I went to pay the cost was $811.62. I was shocked but paid it. I felt like I had been fleeced but the car seemed to be running OK so I let it go. The next day the engine died twice. I returned for a refund. He took my keys, let it idle for 30 minutes, never found the problem, & refused to refund my money so I left. I checked the invoice & found the $80 charge for fuel cleaning that was never mentioned (it was on the estimate) along with labor charges & charges for shop supplies. The original estimate was for $1352 but he said that was quoting the higher part cost & was not accurate so I didn't look at it closely. I later called 2 parts places & was quoted a price of $169 for the idle air control & was told by 4 different mechanics that part almost never goes bad. So this great Meineke mechanic is either dishonest or incredibly inept. I took the car to an independent mechanic who quickly called his friend who only repairs Hondas. It took him 30 seconds to determine it was the ignition switch. He quoted a cost of $150 & I ended up paying less than that for the 30 minute repair. They both said I needed none of the repairs done at Meineke. He said a tune up isn't needed until 100,000 miles. I have 75,000 miles on my 16 year old car & had a tune up at about 55,000 miles. I went back to Meineke, told him I had found the problem, & he quickly refunded $455.79 for the part & labor. He knew he had charged me a huge fee for something unnecessary. He refused to refund the $47.85 for shop supplies or the $80 for the fuel system cleaning we never discussed & I didn't need. So I paid $355.83 for a tune-up I didn't need. The independent mechanic said chains such as Meineke often find things to sell you as this one did. He said he was so busy he didn't have to sell unnecessary parts. I don't plan to ever visit a chain again. Fortunately, I have found an honest & ethical mechanic. He asked me not to put him on Angie's List because he's too busy.
