Brought in for a "weird sound". Even though the "shop rate" was $80/hr, and spent close to an hour looking around trying to find the specific source of the noise, I was only charged $21. It was easily heard on the road...but in the shop, hard to narrow down the exact reason. It turned out to be some rubber grommet type things the previous mechanic neglected to install correctly. Even suggested to take back to other mechanic to fix..instead of saying he would do it. A real stand up guy and doesn't hesitate to explain exactly what's going wrong w/ your car so you can make an informed decision

My 2002 Ford Focus has been in to Katz a few times now, and they seem to know what they're doing and charge fair prices. I brought it in for a noise on turning, and they charged me $20 and told me that I needed to see a body shop to repair some front end damage. I brought it in for a general checkup at 6 years (but only 42K miles) and they charged me about $70 to replace a fuel filter (at my request), and said everything else was fine. Recently, I brought it in for some front end noise, and they mentioned a missing shield and that one of my coil springs was broken. Charged $20. They even let me know there was a service bulletin about the broken spring, so I took the car to the Ford dealer and that's being replaced at no cost to me.

Jeff has always done good work for me, and I've always been pleased with his price (sometimes surprised that it wasn't more), and I've never had to take a car back to them. They've done brakes, shocks, O2 sensors, oil changes, etc. Each time the job was finished right the first time. Jeff always takes the time to explain in detail what was wrong and what they did to fix it. My neighbors and I joke that sometimes you end up knowing more than you ever wanted to know about car problems! When I moved to Elgin, I tried several mechanics, some of whom have received positive reviews on this site. For my money, though, you can't beat Katz.

As the other reviewers have said, they always take time to explain any problems and fixes in detail to you. Jeff doesn't hold back and is also extremely honest about what repairs should be donand what can wait. I appreciate that they keep our beater running without pouring too much money into it but also take great care of of our "nicer" car. At least twice they have sent me to different shops for things they knew they couldn't fix. I trust Jeff (and son) with my car and value all the knowledge they give me about the repairs they do.
