My first experience at Top Notch.... I was having trouble with the gear shifter going in to the proper gear on my Ford F 150 so I brought it to the local Ford dealership and paid $100 for their estimate of the $800 of work I would need on my steering column. Well before I had the work done I mentioned it to my uncle and he told me to try this place called Top Notch before I spend all that money. Well, I pull up and Robert the shop owner comes out. I tell him the problem, he gets under the truck, comes back up and tells me it'll be about $15 for the shifter cable that I need. Needless to say I got my money back from Ford for their "estimate." The best part about that story is it pales in comparison to stories that I hear from other customers I run into at Top Notch. Honest and knowledgable mechanics are a rare commodity. Robert at Top Notch is both.

They don't come any better than Robert. He figures out the problems even the dealerships can't. His prices are very reasonable and he is extremely honest. Thanks for all the help throughout the years Robert. We'll miss you when we move. Thanks, Jill

It's important to find a mechanic you inherently trust. There is so much relief you experience when you don't have to worry about getting gypped. This team of mechanics treat your car and your wallet as if they were his own property and budget constraint. I was worried that my clutch or its cable had to be replaced because I started sensing a different response. After a thorough inspection of my transmission system and pumping the fluid to make sure there were no bubbles in it, they only charged me $30, even though my car was on their lot for almost a week. Of course I went back the next time one of our cars was in trouble. We had a quote of $320 for replacement of both sets of rotors and brake pads, it was ready for pick up the next morning and we were billed only $220. Pleased to say that parts came with a long term warranty. A major reason to trust this place is that this joint is small enough to rely on and really care about the customer satisfaction. The team are experts at what they do and bring years of experience to fix your car. Big chains like Jiffy Lube, Pep Boys and your average auto dealer, who just get you in by some deal advertised on TV or by mail in coupons tend to be really busy and frequently surprise you with the bill, because they didn't have enough time to have a dialogue with you about your expectations. They usually also employ young inexperienced personnel who are not totally sure that they have their heart in this. Top Notch is usually open 9-6, so even for working 8-5 downtown, it's easy to make it there in time by either taking the metro from Ogilvie to Norwood Park station or the blue line to Harlem and then 90N bus. Both our cars are domestics, so I don't know how they would do with other makes of cars, but I'm sure if you ask, they'll give an honest reply.

I agree with all of the comments on here. I brought my car in to have its brakes worked on in the morning and was helped by Robert. He asked me what was wrong, and I told him the basics and left my car with him. He called me back soon with his diagnosis and said it would be ready by 4pm. He called back at 3 and said it was ready. The prices were reasonable for the work that he did. This shop makes it seem like nothing was ever wrong. Just in, out, and that's it! Very business-like. I would recommend this shop very highly!

they do not get any better than robert. he has been working on our cars for close to 10 years. never a problem!!! great prices!!! 3 years ago my husband and i have moved 45 miles, but we still go to top notch. it involves alot of juggling when it comes to picking up and dropping off, but there is no price on piece of mind. knowing that the work will be done, and done correctly and we are not being robbed is worth it. believe me, we have tried to find a shop closer, but for now robert and his shop will keep our business.

Just wanted to add an update. It has been 2 years since I reviewed, Robert, at Top Notch Auto Care. I am pleased to say that my husband and I continue to make the trip to have Robert work in our cars. Recently, I needed some brake work done. Had to pull into a local place. Had them look at it, got an estimate, went out side and called Robert. Told him everything they said, told him price they quoted. He said to go ahead, getting the car to him would be time consuming and dangerous. He said their price was spot on. He even spoke with the local mechanic on the phone for me. Local guy was impressed that one mechanic would take the time to do that, all when another mechanic would be making the money.
