Chuck and Larry are not only honest, they're great and interesting people. Some friends and I were stuck in sub-zero degree Des Moines with what we thought was a severely slipping transmission. We'd had some problems with transmissions before on an '89 Bronco, so when our '91 Buick with 39,000 miles started sounding like the engine revved every time the transmission down-shifted, we thought we were going to die. And not just because we needed to get to Maryland from Iowa when it was -5 degrees out. Chuck and Larry, owner's of Chuck and Larry's Transmissions, after patiently asking us some questions over the phone and directing our limping vehicle to their shop, had a technician look at the old LeSabre. Despite the "Check Engine" light having been on for a day or so, he determined that it wouldn't do any good to hook up the diagnostic (at least not for a transmission problem), since the model was't completely electronic. After a road test, in which the mechanic duplicated the troubles, he found that it was the ERG, not the transmission that was at fault. After having spent 30 minutes testing the car out, he explained the trouble, and that our transmission was fine. Moreover, we could get to Maryland okay, where at least it was a more reasonable 10 above. The best part was, they didn't even charge us for the time. Most any other place would ask for their diagnostic times' worth, as is fair. Now, ours was a unique situation, so I can't make promises on Chuck and Larry's part, but they were willing to take pity on the plight of some college kids who crowded into their shop at 4:15 pm on a weekday. Since they were honest enough not to sell us some repairs we didn't need, we can't comment for sure on all aspects of Chuck and Larry's service. I can say that Chuck had quoted a figure much lower than we'd paid for the last transmission job, and that we met other customers who were paying comparable prices for what had been estimated to them. Highly recommended.

I'd been told by a my wife as well as a mechanic to check out the transmission. Chuck & Larry's drove it around, found nothing, did some diagnostic work and reported the transmission looked good. I asked them to change the filter & replace the fluid. $70 which I thought was quite fair.

we went in to the shop with a slipping transmission on a dodge caravan. we told them that it was slipping and we needed it replaced. they did some looking and saw that our seals were leaking and needed replaced. We walked out with a 200 repair bill instead of the 2000 bill we told them we needed when we said we need a new transmission. They could have put a new one in and sent us on our way a little richer. I respect these guys immensely.

Being new to the Des Moines area and needing a good mechanic I turned to the internet. I found the reviews on this website about 4 months ago and decided to give Chuck & Larry's a shot. I have taken the car in on two different occasions (for different issues). Each time I went to pick it up they were very willing to explain, and show me, what was wrong and what it took to fix it. They are very easy to talk to and enthusiastic about helping the customer. Other places I've been just want to push you out the door once they get their money, while this place makes the effort to explain and back up their work even when trying to shut down at 5. Every time I have taken my vehicle in they also have a small list of other trouble areas they notice on the vehicle. For instance I recently got new tires and they noticed I was missing a couple lug nuts all while servicing a leaky transmission. It's nice to know I have a competent mechanic I can trust that has a high attention to detail. This seems to be an honest family run business that takes pride in their work.

We dealt with Tim at the shop and he's very knowledgeable - obviously has spent years in the business and knows the ins and outs of tranny repair. They diagnosed my wife's Subaru Imprezza's sick transmission and Tim is going to try to find a replacement. We feel he and the shop goes above and beyond the call and have appreciated his keeping us informed every step of the way. They are members of the BBB and I can understand why. In Central Iowa, they're the team for tranny work!
