Malcomb is sharp and efficient. He's seond generation; his dad was a terrrific mechanic too. He's retired now. Malcomb will let you know what is wrong and will talk about whether its worth it to fix it, or better to limp along a few more miles and then fix it, or if you had darn well better take care of this now. I have a woman friend who was told by her neighborhood mechaninc that she had this and that wrong and gave her a $1200 estimate for it all. She went in to Malcomb, sorted things out on the above basis and got just what she needed for about $375. They don't make appoiintments. Its first come first serve. So early morning is best. Usually you'll have your car back by the afternoon. It's a handy location, right nest to the Cinerama theater

I was referred to the Punahou Repair Shop by an office colleague much more
experienced with cars and car mechanics than myself. Although he had never
gone to the Punahou Repair Shop himself, friends had said good things about it.
I have tried few other repair shops but this one, and only then due to an
emergency or because of dealer warranty. Malcolm at Punahou has always been
honest and thoughtful and his repair costs the lowest and fairest in town. He
won't take advantage of customers' technical ignorance and try to add
unnecessary repairs and costs not absolutely required.

A friend of mine recommended Malcom to me, saying that he
1) always did quality, fair-priced work, and 2) treated my
friend's wife the same as he treated my friend (who is
male). As I am a single female, I was really impressed
with the latter accolade, and I have found my friend's
words to be true. Malcom does a wonderful job on my car,
and is never condescending or short with me. He is honest
and priced fairly. He even once told me where I could get
a part cheaper than at his shop! I recommend him to all of
my friends.

We were referred to Punahou Repair by this website, and have found all the comments to be true. They're honest, reliable and affordable! Even though we're on the other side of the island, it's well worth the inconvenience for the peace of mind.

Malcomb is one of the best and most honest mechanics I've
ever known! I brought a Subaru in that had a radiator I had
just replaced myself but seemed to be leaking. Smoke was
also coming out of the engine. Malcomb fixed both problems
(one problem was the drain plug and the other was oil that
had leaked on the exhaust pipes) within 5 minutes and did
not charge me a penny. He also treats my wife with respect
and gave her the best wave of her life while surfing in
Waikiki. A truly good, honest mechanic!

Malcolm and the guys at Punaho are just terrific. They
take care of my wife's car as well as mine, my friend's
etc. All because they have always done a great job at a
great price. Malcolm is the kind of mechanic who will
tell you what's wrong, what needs to be fixed, and what is
just minor and isn't worth the money. My wife went there
by herself and he recommended she go somewhere else for
tires because it's cheaper. You don't get that type of
honesty anywhere. I brought my car in and didn't even
mention a chronic alignment problem. When I got the car
back Malcolm had noticed it on his test drive and repaired
it, no charge; I hadn't mentioned it because I had been
told by two mechanics that it was not fixable. Everyone I
know now goes there for car problems. Thanks Malcolm!!

Malcolm is very honest. My clutch was totally not working
and I had to have it towed to his shop. I thought for sure
he would have to replace the clutch and I would have
believed him if he told me so. Instead he said he just
needed to tighten this and that... $60 and i was out of
there the next day.
VERY HONEST. I've been bringing the Suzuki to him for the
past 5 years. I wish he fixed BMW's. He could save me a lot
of money.

The power steering on our 2002 Subaru Outback was making a horrible noise,
and, in turn, it was extremely tough to turn the wheel at slow speeds.
Searching the internet, I found a mechanic who had posted an explanation
that this was a common problem for 2000 - 2004 Subaru, and that most
likely it was not the power steering pump, but rather the alternator and timing
belts were causing the problem. I started calling around to mechanics
explaining the situation, and what I found on the internet. You can imagine
the responses I got as they were pretty similar to walking into a doctor's
office and telling the doctor you knew what was wrong because you did a
little research on the internet. After calling over 10 places, I finally called
Punahou Repair, and, to my utter surprise, they actually listened to me. When I
brought the car in, I talked with Lance, explained the problem and told him
about my research. He didn't laugh at me, told me he had never heard of this
problem, but that before they started looking at the power steering pump
they would check these belts. In the end, something that I thought was going
to cost me over a grand cost only $114. My wife and I just moved back to
Honolulu, and we have found our mechanics. These guys are the BEST!

Good work, and good advice for long-term care of the
vehicle.
