As a woman, I confess I was a bit apprehensive when I was addressed as "hon" or "dear," but I have decided to chalk that up to southern manners since I have received nothing but sterling service for my 1983 Jetta turbo deisel. In fact, the first time I went to these guys, I marched right in there and made the admission one should never make to a mechanic - "I've finally got some money to spend on my car. What does it need?" I ended up spending a mere $200 (keep in mind no one had looked at my 14 y.o. car in 18 months) and, on top of that, I kept finding things they had fixed that I hadn't asked them about and that did not appear on my bill. My pedals were replaced with new, my horn finally worked...a bunch of little things. They've got that (to my mind) essential VW attitude of balancing "the perfect way" vs. "what will keep it running." If I ever do have real money to spend, I'll buy one of those new Beetles and take it to them!
