My last experience, my 60,000 mile Toyota was making a clunking sound when going over bumps, and the car still had it origional brakes-took it in and explained my problem. 4 hours later I was told that the brakes were still good, and they found some loose nuts in the front of the car, and they tighten them. The charge was very reasonable and that fixed my clunking noise. It was about my 8th visit and as long as I have cars I'll keep going to Samo!

Have been taking our 2 cars to Howard for years - he was
recommended to me by a mechanic friend, and also
independently by my other mechanic who does my engine
work. (Samo Wheel and Brake mainly does wheel, suspension
& frame, brake and similar work - they don't do most engine
work.) I've always found him to be extremely honest and
trustworthy, and his prices to be fair. On one occasion,
he used a major brand of disk brake pads that turned out to
be defective and broke apart several months after
installation - he replaced them at no charge and with no
hassles. Howard took over the shop from his dad, who is
retired - they've been at this location for decades. Very
highly recommended.

I took my car to Midas in Santa Monica (despite the terrible reviews) for a standard oil change and tire rotation. While I was there, they said that I REALLY REALLY REALLY needed new braeks, but as usual I ignored them and didn't have them do anything else to my car. Then I got to thinking, it really has been a LONG time since I had my brake pads replaced, so maybe they're actually being honest.
After doing some research on Yelp, I decided to go to Samo. I called for an appointment, and they could see me the day I called. I drove up and was immediately greeted by the owner, Howard, and an employee, and they took care of me right away. I told them my story, they drove my car around the block, and took the tires off. And then they told me that I did NOT need new brakes. So, Midas was trying to screw me. I chatted with Howard while the employee put my tires back on, and then I was free to go. No charge. And I was probably there only 10 minutes.
It is so refreshing to find an honest, friendly mechanic. As long as I live in LA, I'll be taking my car to Howard. I can't say enough good things about my experience!
