I drive 6 hours to have Jack and the team work on my toyota pickup which now has 230K miles on it. My latest experience was on one of my monthly work visits to the Bay Area...the mechanic in Mt. Shasta where I live couldn't find out why I was losing coolant. I took it to Jack and was in need of a headgasket repair and a few other vitals...the team did a one week job in 2 1/2 days...they pulled out all the stops so I could get back to my home. And gave me quite a great deal...with a promise that I will from now on not let my servicing go for 4 years! A few years ago I was on a trip about 3 hrs north of the Bay Area when my key broke off in the a remote town with one gas station and a mechanic down the road. He wanted to drill out my ignition switch...have someone drill out my baby? I was freaked! I called DMV Clinic...Jack was not there...they gave me his cell and he talked me through it. He took the time to explain to me that if I trusted the mechanic it was okay because that is what they would have had to do if I could have towed the truck the 200 miles back home. I trust Jack and the whole team at DMV Clinic...I drive 6 hours to only let them work on my truck, with the exception of the 4 yrs here in Shasta where I have tried several mechanics and still don't feel there is someone I can trust. Had I stayed on a regular service program maybe I could have avoided the need for the gasket repair. Love you guys at DMV!

This shop has lots of local fans. It's so difficult to find an honest shop with competant mechanics. This place is known for their honesty. They are pricey...and sometimes they leave the replaced parts in the engine compartment (spark plugs, wires, etc.)but I think that's because they were rushing to get finished. I've heard that Jack has compassion for his employees and treats them pretty well. These guys recommend other shops if they can't handle the job for one reason or another. They are located in this tiny strip mall for auto works, so there's a BMW specialist nearby as well as a super transmission shop. DMV clinic has a courtesy shuttle and the local rental car (Enterprise) will come get you if you prearrange something. I've used DMVC for a simple front brake job on a '93 Ford Escort wagon [$280-290], a "tune up" on the same vehicle [$150] and a complete rebuild of the braking system on my "meathead" husband's Ford F-150 (whatalemmon) pick-up [$800]. This week I'm returning to their shop for front end repairs be it tie-rods or ball joints. These guys are not inexpensive...more than usual. But they're patient and take the time whereas other mechanics in the area do not.

I've been going to DMV for years. I've never known a shop like it for honesty, general straight shooting and friendliness. Jack Sparks is a born teacher (although his son Nathan is now in effect chief mechanic), and has always told me, sometimes at excessive length, exactly what was wrong with my car. They went through a slightly rough period a few years ago, but I stuck with them, and I'm glad I did. (Moved out of Santa Cruz and into the mountains 12 years ago-- the shop is now 20 miles away from my house, and I've still never thought seriously of changing.)

Great shop. They do good work and are straight up about what you need and can limp away without fixing.

I came down to Cali with my toddler, to visit grandma, and had a mysterious electrical problem with my 1993 Volvo 240 wagon. (I had to hot-wire it with a screwdriver each time I turned it off!) I came in without an appointment, explained my problem, and after the younger employee was baffled the owner came out with his test gear... he scratched his beard and found the small disconnected bit in the auto-transmission shift lever. No one who didn't know this old car well would have ever found the problem so quickly. I was back on the road to grandma's before my kid could even start asking, "When are we gonna be there??" When I asked how much I owed him, the owner said, "Give me a twenty." Much thanks.
