The dude was straight forward and quickly identified the
problem with the information he was given. Great place to go
to!

I had some engine work done, and the price was exactly as quoted over the phone. Without my asking, Helmut (the owner and head mechanic) brought me a box of parts that had come off my car to show me what was wrong with each, even including the spark plugs. Since I own an MGB that actually runs, and has never been inside any garage other than my own, it goes without saying that I know something about automobiles. The parts he showed me were exactly what I expected to see, and the explanations were very straightforward. It has been a year since I had my car worked on, and everything that was repaired has stayed that way.

I called around to get various quotes when needing to bring my car in for
routine maintenance. On the phone, Chris, the owner, took down my car
information and called me back immediately. For my questions, he also gave me
some resources and actually called me back to give me the exact information I
was looking for. He quoted me a slightly lower price than the median price I had
found when calling around. When he was unable to take me to the train station
so I could get to work, he offered to get me a complimentary rental car. I wish he
was open on the weekends. I plan to go back to him for next service and bring
my other Volkswagen.

After finding Precision Motor Works in the Mechanix files,
we engaged Helmut to repair our 1998 Cabrio. The Job was
done in a short time at a reasonable cost. Helmut called
after we picked up the car and said his wife could not
find his shop on the web. I explained about "Cartalk" and
the Mechanix files. Maybe I found you another listener--
that will make three in this area.

One of the best Porsche mechanics in the Bay Area. I have
been to many and can talk the talk (I can't do the work).
My car would just die when it got warmed-up. Called him
thinking either the fuel pump, fuel filter or fuel tank
problem; he thought the same things. It turned out to be
the alarm - something VERY difficult and time consuming to
diagnose. He got it done in 2 hours. One man operation -
nice guy too - Helmut is his name.

The owner is very honest, and took time to explain all the
details.

I've been in a few times and PMW is so much better than
dealing with the VW stealership. Work gets done on time,
per verbal quote. Helmut explains the work done and shows
you the parts replaced.

My girlfriend's VW broke down in an unfamiliar
neighborhood. When she called me I went to CarTalk.com and
looked up the nearest repair show with a good rating then
sent her there.
WOW! Helmut - the owner of Precision Motor Works - is
incredible.
Clean, friendly, efficient, and explained EVERYTHING to her
in detail and in non-condescending terms she could
understand. When I took her to pick up the car he had all
the old parts neatly laid out and showed us each one. He
reminds me of the old-school trust-worthy local mechanic.
I wish I had a german car just so I could make
Helmut/Precision my repair guy/place.
I highly HIGHLY recommend this guy.
Thanks Helmut - you are a credit to your prefession!

When I needed to replace the electronic switch that moves
my side mirrors, I called my dealer and was quoted an
estimated $170, including the labor for removing the door
panel. I then checked out cartalk.com and saw the listing
for Precision Motorworks and called them. I spoke with
Craig (turns out he is the owner.) He quoted me $43.50
for the switch, and said that since the door panel did not
need to be removed, there would be no installation charges
at all. He told me to just come by and he would pop it
the replacement part in for me.
When I showed up for my appointment, Craig was chagrined.
Turns out the dealer was correct, and the door panel did
indeed need to be removed. But Craig stated very matter-
of-factly that since he had made the mistake, the shop
would install the switch at the promised price. He
directed me to a local coffee shop where I could wait
comfortably, took my cell phone number, and in 40 minutes
he called to tell me the work was completed. $43.50 plus
tax, and he even refilled the windshield wiper fluid for
me.
I will absolutely come back, and I recommend this shop to
everyone.
