Bob is a knowledgable mechanic, honest to the bone, and won't charge you a cent more than necessary. He's expeditiously and correctly diagnosed even the oddest of my car's ailments. When my old car was on its last legs, I told him I would leave my car with him, but didn't want anything to fixed beyond $100. Before even taking my money, he asked me to take it on a test drive, and told me to save my $100 and get rid of the car. Sure enough, the car died within hours! Afterwards, his incredibly thorough inspections have saved me from buying two lemons. He also exposed a minor problem, but huge bargaining chip on buying my current car-- something the original owner's mechanic of 5 years didn't even catch. His advice, insight, and warm demeanor are commendable, and I strongly recommend him!

I have gone to Bob Redfield for about 10 years now. This guy is one in a million. He has saved me from buying two lemons and probably has saved me a dozen times from unneeded auto repairs that others have suggested. Sometimes because he is booked, or trying to find a part for me repairs have taken a day or so longer than anticipated, but I count that as even more value that he cares enough to make the effort. Once my alternator went bad, and I knew it had a lifetime warranty on it (he had made the replacement before) but the sticker fell off. He managed to get my alternator covered under warranty saving me the pain of having to buy a new one. I cannot recommend this man more.

He understands that my car's only worth so much, and what's important, and what's not, to fix. He even suggests that you do the easier stuff yourself if you can!

Redfield Machine is the first shop that I've had that took me and my car for a test drive to verify my repair concerns. Bob is very patient, honest, and cost conscious. He's an excellent communicator and seems to truly have his clients' best interest in mind. Just wish I had found him sooner.

When I had to move from Boston to Davis, I was saddened that I was going to leave behind my great, honest mechanic in Waltham. But then I found Bob. Bob has a PhD in Medieval Spanish Literature, which is great for me because I'm getting a PhD in Medieval English Literature. He is a great, interesting, funny guy and I always enjoy talking with him when I come in. His personality aside, he is a wonderful mechanic. He tells you when you can get something done for less elsewhere, and encourages you to go there. He calls to check in before making any repairs, and is quite honest about his work--I brought my car in for both a belt change and an unknown heating problem, and he diagnosed the mystery problem before taking the engine apart for the belt to save me on labor costs. He gives you detailed write-ups of all issues and work done on your receipt, uses quality parts and fluids, and he will often keep your broken parts around to show them to you when you pick up the car. When one of my battery cells died, he hooked it up to show me what it looked like--very cool. He is often quite busy, so his turn-around can be a little slow, but it's always worth the wait. I can't say enough good things about Bob.

I have been taking my two cars (a Subaru Outback and a Toyota Corolla) to the Redfield Machine for 10 years. As others have observed, Bob is a truly charming, gentle, and totally trustworthy mechanic. I have had good and honest mechanics before, but not ones who I trusted as fully as Bob. In addition, his chief mechanic, Felipe, is nice and very good. Bob always tries to hold down costs and lays out all the options for major repairs and services. Contrary to what some others have said, I have found his turnover time very rapid and, of course, the quality of the work excellent. Sure you can get your oil changed somewhere for $5 or so cheaper, but Bob actually does all the other things that are supposed to be done like checking fluid levels, tire pressures et al. You can't go wrong with the Bob and the Redfield Machine.
