Al Polito, the owner of Royal Automotive, is easily the best mechanic I've had the pleasure of doing business with. Judging by his personality and sense of humor, he might very well be a lost Magliozzi brother. Not only does he know cars, he's also a hell of a nice guy--never condescending to customers who have a problem, always very helpful and clear in explaining what the mechanical problem is, and very accomodating to regular customers who have unexpected breakdowns (their cars, at least...) My previous mechanic (who shall go unnamed but mildly accursed; he was a competent mechanic but a bit of a twerp) always made me feel a like an idiot when I was unsure what the problem with my car was. Al, on the other hand, is always considerate, even when I *HAVE* done something clearly idiotic (like the time I neglected for several months to check the oil in my old Datsun and practically ran it dry...) Ray, the other mechanic at the Royal, is also very competent, friendly, and efficient. Al is a consummate professional who clearly loves what he's doing. I've recommended him to all my friends, and occasionally to random strangers on the bus. One other great thing about Al: Like me, he has a 1973 Chevy Impala and realizes just how ridiculous such vehicles are.

Steve took over after Al left, and ditto the comments for Steve. Is there anything he doesn't know about cars? Steve charges me what hours it takes to repair my car, not what hours the book states it should. I take that back--I swear he charges less. It's a bit inconvenient for me, living in OV, but well worth the drive.

I took an old subaru with 13 years of easy coast rust in to have a bearing replaced. The garage applied every scientific and unscientific approach possible to releasing the assembly over two days. They succeeded, repaired the car fine and were very, very reasonable in the hours of labour they charged. Kept me appraised of progress and were completely above board. Three cheers for good, honest garages. Thank you Steve
