I had brought my Kia truck to 3 different mechanics, to do work that I knew needed to be done on my truck. I am a weekend mechanic that has no time as of late to fix my own vehicles so needed to find a mechanic I could trust. I acted like I didn't know anything about cars just that it rattled noisily and that the rear end shimmied a bit. I knew all it needed was new rear bearings and the rattle was from a heat shield on the muffler needed a spot weld. 2 different mechanics told me the entire axel was gone and the exhaust system needed to be replaced. 1 went so far as to tell me my shocks in front were also gone and that my front bearings as well as rear axel and bearings were gone. Both had quoted me over $1500 to fix the problems in order for it to pass inspection. I knew they were both talking loudly from their Lower back extremity and told them at this time that I was a mechanic in my spare time and could only find fault with the rear bearings and heat sheild. One of them immediately backtracked and said they were just kind of recomending these other fixes. The second mechanic, the one who also said I needed new shocks in the front, I explained that I had just replaced the front shocks about 2 months before. Well needless to say he got very hot under the color and asked me to leave immediately. Then I went over to Daves Auto. I acted the same way with him when I dropped off the Kia, like a dim whitted yuppie. He was very nice, we talked a little chewed the fat, he made me feel at ease. We discovered we knew a few of the same people, not difficult up here in Maine, you can guess why. And he said he would take it for a test drive and if need be he would give it a diagnostic test and get it on the lift to check everything out. He said he would just charge me for the inspection sticker and replace it if it passed. If not he would let me know what was needed and while he was inpecting it if anything else caught his eye he would call and let me know immediately. He asked me to leave the truck and he would get to work on it as soon as he could. I told him to take his time I didn't need it back for at least a couple weeks. And he had quite a few vehicles there to work on. A couple days later Dave calls me. Tells me he didn't want to start work on the truck until I gave him the okay. He proceeds to tell me that the truck needed to have the rear wheel bearings replaced and that the heat shield needs to be tack weld. Every thing else looks and is tight. Did a full inspection of the vehicle. He did say because it is an older model vehicle he would need to drop the axel to fix the bearings, which I already knew and this would just make the labor a little more. Total cost of full inspection, rear wheel bearings, and he even cleaned the vehicle $350. Now that is a fair price and a honest mechanic. I recommend Dave to anyone in Central Maine.
