I'm not going to lie. Mike, the neighborhood friendly mechanic, is a friend of ours and has been for several years. That said, we bring in cars that require, well, a sense of humor. We've dumped beaters on him in questionable condition and also our spiffy little Honda CR/V. But here's the kicker, we get him to work on our beloved 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon, and that's not a decision we take lightly. I've worked on her since we got her, including a ton of on-the-road repairs. After a 7,000 mile cross-country trip from Portland, Oregon back to Maine (we detoured a bit) I thought I knew her pretty well - but Mike taught me more about that vehicle in an afternoon than you can imagine. Literally this guy has forgot more about that Vanagon than I'll ever know. He has extraordinary knowledge of vehicle systems new and old, and shares his knowledge freely. He'll do what needs to be done without trying to upsell you on needless repairs, though he will tell you when he sees dark clouds on the horizon. We are always - and I totally mean this - always, surprised by the labor costs, and in a good way. We do a lot of routine maintenance ourselves and are reasonably mechanically capable, but for anything outside our comfort zone the cars go to M&D. In short, I can't say enough good things about this shop. If you're looking around for a local honest mechanic give them a shot. You won't be disappointed.
