I found these guys on this site when I needed a place to get a tune-up for my '96 Volvo. I called up and got an appointment a few days later. They were very friendly and got everything done in a few hours. The car has gone about 120,000 miles - they consider it a baby and are ready to work on it for another couple hundred thousand. If needed they will give you a lift to/from the Friendship Heights Metro stop while they work on your car.

After going to the local Volvo dealership and being treated very poorly, someone recommended Bethesda Imports and I have been extremely satisfied. I have gone in when a warning light flashed and they reset it immediately and did not charge me anything. Very accomodating.

This shop knows Volvos extraordinarily well. Their work is done right at a fair price. They are flexible and go the extra mile when special assistance or help is needed.

They have always been exceedingly honest and the price are incredable. Oil changes for 30 bucks 60,000 mile service for a couple hundred. Great service timely. One of the best experiences I have had.

They will explain inexpensive ways to avoid a costly repair if the repair is not essential for safety. I began using Bethesda Import about 17 years ago, when the Volvo dealer told me I needed an $800 engine repair for a hesitation I was experiencing. Mike (the owner) offered me a second opinion: use a can of STP or equivalent for two tankfuls of gasoline. It worked like a charm, I never had to repair the engine, and I have been a happy customer ever since then. Bethesda Import Service also services Japanese cars, at least for basic needs.

Shortly after moving to DC, I started going to BIS based on the reviews on this site, and I'm glad I did. Mike and his crew are terrific. Everything about the place is very professional, and they are customer service oriented to the utmost. As many loyal customers as they have (and it's a lot), they want your business. For instance, before I left to study in Canada one winter, I asked them just to check it over to make sure I didn't have any major problems, and they did it for free. They have also replaced a lugnut and plugged a tire leak for free. Granted I give them a lot of business ('88 740 w/230k mi.), but they always give me a fair deal and, most importantly, do top-notch work. Mechanics in the DC area are expensive in general, but these guys know that their success lies not in nickel-and-diming you, but earning your trust. The website is

We take our Volvo to Mike blindly, throw ourselves on his mercy, demonstrate ignorance openly, and he always treats us fairly. His estimates for work come in about a third of those at other mechanics and often comes in under. He is simply, trustworthy, and an asset to your life portfolio if you know him. John
