This place is the best. Skip, who does intake, is always funny and engaging. And they're smart and fast, and fair. They've always done right by my wife and I, but they really outdid themselves today. The onboard computer in our '87 Olds (a great car, for the record) finally went haywire. The guys at Ideal thought they figured it out, and it seemed to be a quick, cheap deal. But then the car started freaking out again. We took it back, and over the next couple of days, they worked on it , all the while aware of that we're not exactly the most well-off customers. Because they'd had some difficulty with it, they cut us an incredible deal on the labor, which all told, was no small amount of money in itself, pre-discount. They were sensitive to us, friendly, and the car is running like a TOP. And they really did us a solid, charging far less than they could have, and without any haggling. They knew they hadn't gotten this tricky problem quite right the first time and that we were inconvenienced. They more than made up for it. It's Friday night as I'm writing this. Just picked up the car. But I wholly intend to show up at Ideal Engine first thing on Monday morning with a giant box of coffee and a ton of fresh donuts for everybody there. These are some good guys! -Rod

Something was wrong with my transmission. I was worried because transmissions are big bucks. I had the car towed to Ideal Engine. They told me that the clamps (or connectors of some kind) that attached the hoses to the transmission had rusted out. It turned out to be a cheap repair, and I had my trusty car back the same day. I know someone else who was having car trouble. She took her car back to the dealer several times. The dealer said there was nothing they could do. She took it to Ideal Engine. They told her it was the pistons, and to take it back to the dealer because the pistons were still under warranty. She did. And this time the dealer fixed the problem for free.

I like the guys a lot- I've occasionally had to go back a couple of times for something, but they are good about telling me if something's under warrentee...

I stumbled across Ideal Engine when I first move to Davis Square over 5 years ago. I still live in the general area, and this shop is my first choice. I have brought several cars to them including a Honda Civic, Mercury Mystique and Kia Rio Wagon. Both for routine work and large repairs. This shop is very thorough. For instance, while working on the suspension of my car, they discovered that the last shop installed the brake pads incorrectly. I was glad to know about the problem, but I did not look forward to paying for the brake job again. Their prices are reasonable. After a timing belt broke on my wife's Kia, we had Ideal install a "new" (i.e. used) engine in the car. Before deciding on Ideal, I called the local dealerships and other engine shops. Ideal's quote was lower than everyone else. The other shops also told me it would take at least a week to get an engine, but not with Ideal. When I asked Ideal how long the repair and getting a new engine would take, I was told that they would need to speak with their suppliers and would call me back in an hour, which they did. One hour later, they called me and said they had an engine available right now. The repair went smoothly and was under the estimate, even though a new clutch had to be installed. After the engine swap, the follow up service was also great. After a few months the alternator belt snapped. They took the car first thing in the morning and by the end of the day found the problem and replaced the belt all at no charge. The problem had to do with the alignment of the belt; we had gone back a couple of times to change the tension of the belt. This visit, they fixed the underlying problem. We have not had a problem with the engine since then (6 months). Like I said, this is my go to shop. They fix the problem, communicate and are honest. My wife has in the past complained that some shops treat her as "just a girl"; she has never said anything like that about Ideal. The only problem with Ideal is that they work bankers hours. So you have to adjust your schedule a bit. I highly recommend Ideal Engine. They fix the problem.
