These guys are great. It's a tiny shop, but it's amazing what they can do. They're always courteous--even when the questions are stupid--and they've always been straight with me when working on my car(s). They've helped me with routine inspections, exhaust work, and bizarre "mystery" problems: When we replaced our old car, there was a problem with the fuel tank--it would trigger the automatic shutoff prematurely... they weren't even sure how, but their tinkering sorted it out!

I own a 1984 Chrysler Lebaron convertible that I bought off of Craigslist for $600. Full of nagging problems. These are the kind of mechanics that are willing to do what it takes to fix my car, for a fair price. Very friendly, very honest. I've moved to the other side of the city, but I still plan on using them, since they are easily accessible by bus, right in Union Square in Somerville.

I had a shifting problem with a 98 Golf VW, bought used at 35K miles, and since it had less than the 50K warranty brought it to Boston VW for diagnosis and repair. They said it was an error in the transmission "learning" control and reset it to factory settings. The car worked fined until a year later when it began to shift late again. I brought it back to Boston VW....they told me it needed a new transmission for $2,800 and refused to do anything else to the car. They also charged me $92 to get my keys back. I took the car to Union Gulf and they traced the diagnosis through VW software to a throttle plate problem and fixed the car for $62. Big difference between a dealer who is out to scam a female car owner and a local mechanic who is willing to find the real problem and fix it honestly. These guys are great!

I have never found these guys to be anything but fair, honest and friendly. They don't waste your time or your money. I used to take my Honda there and now that the warantee on my VW is up, I can't wait to go to Jim and Greg again and spare myself the hell that is Boston VW.

This is a family run business and the brothers are GREAT!!! they have been keeping my old Subaru clunker up and running since I moved here from Maine 6 years ago. The odometer on this car quit at over 285 thousand miles four years ago and I've driving back & forth to Maine and Jersey from Somerville countless times so she's up there. They are now tending to my hand me down Ford Tempo;'93 with 75,340 thousand miles and the baby of the group, a Buick Century;'93 with only 17,650 miles on her. They are experienced and honest and I highly recommend them. My domestic partner switced from his mechanic to the brothers after he saw how they helped me keep my old Subie on the road and happy on my slim pocket book.

These guys are a family run business. They are as personable, honest, patient, willing to bend over backwards for your schedule, work whatever it takes sort of mechanics that you could ever ask for. I have a 2003 jetta wagon and have been taking it there since I bought it in 2005. They have done major rebuilds on the engine. I haven't had an issue with them since. They'll do whatever it takes to keep your costs down without compromising fixing the car. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable and honest mechanic. Note, they don't do body work, but they will make great recommendations to people who do.
