While it seems odd that two brothers named Murphy would specialize in Volkswagens, these guys are truly excellent. Their clientel is extremely loyal. They take excellent care of the older Jettas, Rabbits, and bugs and seem to have a real affection for the older cars. They can be pricy, but that's due more to the fact that they use only authorized VW parts (which cost a lot). Labor is not outrageous. They'll look for things that may be going wrong with your car, but give you no pressure to get them fixed. Anytime I've had a problem, I've always been able to get it resolved the next day. They're within walking distance of the Red Line North Quincy station.

I'm a shade tree mechanic myself, and I find Murphy's to be an excellent shop. Honest, timely, and always willing to make it right. They know VW's. They also sell used cars.

When the local VW shop couldn't get me in for 2 weeks to fix my broken radiator, the guy in parts recommended Murphy Brothers. Since then it's the only place my car has been except for oil changes. With the 5pm closing it's too hard to get there and get an oil change. Walking distance to the North Quincy T station is great. When I was accidentally over charged for a battery, Paul was quick to offer to either credit my account or refund my credit card.

These guys are quite simply the best I've ever found. They are friendly, straightforward, and very helpful. Paul spent countless hours going back and forth with my insurance company to add work to a claim that was then 9 months old. Much wrangling later, they added a new radiator, AC condenser, and exhaust to the claim! The only downside to this shop is that if you're doing the 9-5 thing in Boston, it can be tough to get to the shop for pickup in time. Of course, it does make for a nice excuse to get out of work early! The other "problem" is that they only use genuine VW parts. It's probably the right way to go in terms of quality, but it can make for some expensive bills. Alas, I have moved away and no longer visit Murphy Bros, but I highly recommend them to anyone in the Boston area. I found many rip-off artists and even a few competent mechanics in my time there, but no one even close to these guys.

Over the past 3 years we've been taking our Audi A4 and VW Jetta to Murphy's brothers exclusively. What keeps us coming back is knowing that the car problems will be fixed fast, they will be fixed the first time around, and we won't be overcharged. None of those snobby VW/Audi dealer attitudes here - simply good, honest and competent work. Oh, don't judge their quality by the look of their shop. Sure, it's old (they've been on the same lot for like 30 years, I think) and it doesn't look very modern and cool. But yet you'll always know the work will be done and it will be done well.

I had an estimate from another shop for a timingbelt/waterpump/etc. replacement, and these guys came in about $600 cheaper. The car was fixed faster then I expected, and although I had an issue with the check engine light coming on after the repair, these guys chased down the problem and fixed it for free. It's hard to find a fair and an honest mechanic...I'm glad I did.
