I just sent this in, but I've got to amend it. After reading your bios, including the origin of your shop, I have to point out the the ARC means 'auto repair cooperative'. They started out (at least John, the longest serving denizen did) in the same, misguided, idealistic way you folks did. Is this a small world or what? I believe there are four mechanics now; they all know their stuff . We've been using the place for almost twenty years. They are big on just about all foreign makes. If you have Japanese or Scandinavian cars, they're a great resource.

I have been going to arc garage for over twenty years. ARC stand for auto repair coop. and that is how they run there business, cooperativily. They are honest and will not fix anything that was not the origianl problem. They will tell you about some other things that they may see as future problems. There prices are standard, and the shop is always clean.

These guys are the best. They were recommended to me by a woman as being a garage that treats their women customers well, and I have been very impressed with their willingness to explain things to me, recommend maintenance practices, & fit me in when there was an emergency. BTW, their address is 320 Riverside Dr., & the other 3 mechanics' names are Steve Brown, Michael Southerland, and Tom Stringer.

I've been taking my car to the guys at ARC for several years, and have always received good service. What impresses me most is that they will often say, "That's something that may become a problem, but it's not yet" or "Your brakes should have another 10,000 miles on them", instead of going ahead and fixing things that don't need to be fixed. My car has 175,000 miles on it, so they could easily say, "You need this and this and this", but they seem to be very honest about what actually needs to be done. And I like the fact that they patiently explain the problem and how they'll fix it without making me feel stupid. I think all of the mechanics are very competent, and I feel as if they're very careful and thorough in their work without dragging it out. They're great guys, too. I highly recommend ARC.

Two of the 4 guys there are Amherst College grads. They think that MIT turns out inferior mechanics. This shop started as "auto repair coop" in the 70's. It's now a more usual style garage. They play NPR all day. The value is good: reasonable hourly rates, repair parts rather than replace them when possible, and don't rip you off for new parts when necessary. They give clear, understandable explanations of what's been done, and they look for appropriate preventive maintenance. I've had 2 cars that they kept on the road well over the 100k range by nursing them (the cars) along appropriately.

Their shop is meticulous. They are very low key and polite, never condescending and always helpful.

the guys at arc garage are the best i've known in the valley. there are other very good mechanics (ernie's texaco, for example), but arc's quartet is unbeatable. i cannot recommend them highly enough for repair work or advice on toyotas and hondas.
