My wife calls from the road. She says, the car won't go into gear. I tow it to my local garage, in Waltham. Yup, they say, needs a new transmission. $2,000. I take it to 3 others. They all say the same thing. Then I asked around my office, and this woman says, call my husband--he fixes cars, and I know he is good, and he is honest. (Would she be working, and driving a 10 year old car if he was other than good and honest?). Anyway, I decide to have it towed to Berardi's, even though I don't want to pay for another towing ($86.00). To make a long story short, Berardi went under the hood with his tools, took some things apart, came out a half hour later with a limp, black rubbery thing, and said, "this is what I thought it sounded like...etc." It's cost was under $10. The labor, on the other hand, was $1900.00! Just kidding. Actually, he didn't even charge me for the part or the labor. I paid my bill, drove my wife's car home, and left my own car there for service. Berardi's is a family owned business in its second generation, owned by Tom and Al Berardi. There mother still does the bookkeeping as she did when her husband, Sully Berardi owned the business. Both wives work, and all of them drive used, old cars. This is a gem of a shop. They aren't close to public transportation and they don't do loaners, but they will drive you to the office if it's not too far away.

This shop is owned by a pair of brothers, too. They have been doing this forever and they are intelligent diagnosticians who don't assume that you are ignorant of cars. The body shop is run by talented, caring people. Good guys!

Berardi Automotive is owned by the Berardi brothers, Tom and Al. In fact, they are known as "Click and Clack" of the greater Milford area. I started going to Berardi's many years ago and was so impressed with Al's knowlege (studied engineering in college), his fairness, geekiness, and his honesty that I eventually married him! While I was working at Polaroid (my former fair city, Cambridge), a friend's wife's car was about to go in for a new transmission to the tune of lots of money. I suggested that he spend the money and tow it to Berardi's. The problem turned out to be a $6.00 item!
