Jim never performs any work that isn't needed. He will tell you when you have serious problems, but he'll also say "xyzzy isn't serious, I don't think you should waste your money fixing it." In other words, he doesn't scam folks. He fixes the *cause* of problems, not the symptoms.

I always appreciate Jim's honesty. As others have said,
he will tell you what repairs are really important to do
and which ones can just wait (or don't even need to be
done). He's been checking ouot our Saturn for a few years
now. This is the car that gets driven back and forth from
Chicago to Rochester, NY to school every year, so it's
important to me that it's safe and in good working order.
He's a really good guy, and I would highly recommend him.
And he's never made me feel stupid because I am female,
either, which is also very nice.

They have successfully repaired things after I have
attempted and screwed them up.
They have stayed a few minutes longer so I could get in and
pick up my car.
They have never heard of Car Talk though.
