I've had multiple cars to 12th Street Repair -- probably a dozen or so different major jobs -- including timing belts, computer failures, head gasket replacements, etc. I take all my big complicated work to 12th Street. They are a little pricey ($$$) but I have NEVER been disappointed. The problem is always fixed the first time, which is rare at most other places. The cost is worth it when it is done right the first time.

I've been dealing with Tom (owner)for the past 15 years. He's very competent, always gives straight answers to questions and is never too busy to talk about your car. I've recommended him to many of my friends and no one has been disappointed. He runs an outstanding shop!

We've taken everything from Subarus to Volvos to Suburbans
to them, and they've always been able to fix it. One time
when I was driving home, the engine temperature suddenly
shot up, and I turned around and drove to them. Tom came
out, looked at it, went back in and came back with a can of
water and filled up the radiator. That solved the problem,
and he didn't even charge me.

I always take my "difficult" work to Tom -- internal engine
work, difficult disassemblies, etc. Tom and his mechanics
have many years of experience from the garage and from
racing. They thoroughly understand all aspects of engines
including the modern electronics. Over the last 10-15
years and probably a dozen major jobs, I have never been
disappointed. Tom is a little pricey but he ALWAYS gets
the problem fixed.

Tom is great to work with and very honest. Price is
competive, sometimes cheaper, but never more expensive. Will
let you know if problem isn't even worth fixing. The best
thing I can say about Tom is what he said, "I am too busy to
fix things twice, or that aren't broke to begin with." How
many mechanics can you say this about? He fixes all of our
cars, and does a great and honest job every time - even our VW.

I moved to Texas and bought a Sienna in 2001, so Tom hasn't
worked on my cars since then. However, he is by far the best
mechanic I ever had. Twice, I called him from McAllen, and
he told me over the phone how to fix strange problems on my
1989 Caravan. Free. One was an invisible burned wire to a
fan relay. Unbelievable.
He is a master mechanic. The hardest part of finding a
mechanic is to find one who can find the problem. That is
Tom!!!
The other reviewer is correct. The bus from Cedar Rapids
goes no more than a block away. This will not suffice for
those who have to get to work early, but for us retirees who
can walk a few blocks from First Avenue in C.R. it is very
practical. If/when I got to Cedar Rapids, I will evaluate
any needed work on my 2002 Sienna and have him do it.

This is the place I recommend to anyone needing honest car
repair. I do most of my own car maintenence and repair.
During sub-zero temperatures in January 2009 my Subaru
Forester revolted. Having no sheltered place to work on my
car and a tool shortage resulting from the June 2008
flooding I needed to hire this job out. I found positive
comments for 12th St. Repair through the Car Talk web site
and am very pleased with the work that was done and the
service I received. I was treated respectfully and
honestly and not sold a "bill of goods" or talked down to
because I am female.
