One of my first encounters with Dick was after having slowly driven my then-18-year old Catalina convertible back to West Palm Beach from Miami (about 90 miles) with horrible noises coming from the rear end. His shop manager at that time listened to my description of the problem and told me that I needed to replace the rear axle, as "the gears were shot". I arranged for a local junk yard to deliver one, only to find out later that once the car was up on the lift all that it needed was new axle bearings. Without prompting from me, Dick told me that he was going to eat the cost of the rear axle (about $120) and that he no longer had a shop manager. He emphasized that no diagnosis should have been given to me without him having driven the car, and that this sort of thing would not ever happen again. We still own that car, and it is now approaching 298,000 miles and going strong. I and my family and friends have all been going to his shop for the past 12 or 13 years now, with various foreign and domestic cars, and we have all been extremely satisfied with his services, advice, outlook and attitude. I feel extremely fortunate to have encountered a person like Dick Smith, and would recommend his services to anyone in need of good, honest and dependable auto service.
