Walking into Jack Smith's is walking back in time. There are no service writers, no fancy lounges, just competent mechanics who know what they are doing. They are not "replacers." They will not change out a part until they are certain it is the culprit. They even tracked down (not for me, for someone else) a true Car Talk style problem--mice had gotten into a wiring harness between the firwall and the foot board and eaten away insulation on the wiring, causing intermittent shorts. They recently tracked down an intermittent problem with my 1992 Ford Ranger. Their determination to get to the bottom of the problem was impressive--they seemed to take the vehicle's fess up about what was wrong personally (it turned out the the contacts on the computer module were corroded and they found a new computer for less than $200 for the part).

I've been bringing my cars here for years. They've dealt with everything from routine oil changes to a tow-trucker diagnosis of "your engine's seized - you'll need a rebuild". They've been fantastic and always take time to explain the problem and what they did to fix it. They turned around the seized engine within two days (new battery, new starter, 5 hours of diagnosing, fixing and test-driving), despite it turning up on their doorstep at 2am - along with five other tow-ins. They offer advice on everything from refurbished vs. new parts to buying advice so you don't end up with another clunker. In fact, if I didn't have anything better to do on a Saturday, then I wouldn't need to listen to Car Talk.
