A full-size car for a full-size Cello.

Dear Tom and Ray:

I have a 1986 Subaru wagon. I'm going to need a bigger car in about a year when my son Joey switches to a bigger cello. I don't like the way my friend's Volvo handles here in the mountains--my Subaru has done extraordinarily well by comparison--and I don't like the crash ratings on mini-vans. I want a car which will handle well and get fairly reasonable gas mileage. I drive about 35,000 miles a year, so it adds up fast. What vehicles should I be considering?

RAY: As always, there are at least two approaches to any problem. The first approach would be to look for a larger wagon. If you like your Subaru, you should look at the new, larger Subaru Legacy wagon. If that's not big enough, try a Ford Taurus wagon.

TOM: The other approach is to dump the cello, get the kid a harmonica, and buy yourself a nice RX-7 Convertible.
