While growing up in Los Angeles My Dad restored cars and
became friends with Ed Big Daddy Roth. I learned a lot
from them. In my adult life I worked as a diesel mechanic
but had to retire early because of arthritis. I know my
way around a car and until retirement I always did repair
work on my cars because no one else was competent enough
or honest enough. Gray's has always been honest and has
never tried to upsell uneeded repair - of course they
recommend repair but never upsell dishonestly (It is too
easy to get caught in a dishonest upsell). Harold Grey
will not allow his mechanics to make or create problems.
he has a very low overhead and the shop is clean inside
and out.
I gave a low rating on safe location because Grey's is
located in the downtown area and, like any downtown area,
the neighborhood has a lot of homeless people.

Always honest: as is true with any shop, their honesty is
directly associated to how hungry the mechanic is. But, the
owner/operator protects his customers when he can - he is
mostly busy all the time with operational stuff.
No rental service, but that is how the shop keeps overhead
low so the cost isn't passed on to the customer in shop
rate.
Neighborhood: the shop will have to take a hit on this. They
are located in the downtown area and that makes them
convenient, but like a lot of downtown areas, the area has a
large population of transients. In the past ten years, I
have never had my cars broken into.
I worked on cars my entire life, learning from my father
and a family friend, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. I worked on
vehicles for the Army. Medical issues won't allow me to work
on my cars anymore. I am a perfectionist and very picky
when it comes to work on my cars. Gray's has rarely let me
down. When they do, they fix the problem, no questions
asked, on the spot, with the owner/operator watching to make
sure they get it right - this is the kind of service that
is hard to find these days.
My cars:
'93 Explorer with 225,000 miles.
'68 Chevy show truck (Owner/operator is an expert on muscle
cars).
'05 Ram 1500 fixed a brake problem (caliper not releasing
all the way) the dealership couldn't figure out.
